Yamaha D-20 restoration / modernization

My "almost done" pictures.

I desperately need a "cheap n cheerful" hi hat stand for this kit. Not necessarily vintage or desirable- an old 80's Pearl single leg stand would be fine... Check your 'junk piles' and let me know!

Once the bass head settles in I'll get it tuned up and groovin'. It already sounds amazing, and I just can't get over how well these toms SING!Cool1

That ride is my old 22" BEAST, and the crashes are a med and med thin 16" A Zildjian from the 80's. I may attack this ride with a roll (or two) of duct tape...LoLoLoLo

Some notes:

(*) the resonant bass head is the original, but it was used as a batter for a while. I traced my 8" splash and cut a hole so I could use it... I REALLY want an intact original resonant head (so please check for me!)

(*) the snare is my recently ressurected Acrolite (sounds great)

(*) all tom heads (and snare batter) are Ambassadors; bass batter is an Emporor.

(*) 3" felt strips on the batter and resonant heads of the bass (thanks to local fabric store)

(*) front bass hoop is one of the new ones; thr back one is a beater hoop I picked up befor I decided to 'remake' the hoops. I still need the 'square edge' hoop claws so I can get the matching batter hoop on here. (that front one looks damn sweet doesn't it?) :)

I founds a matching snare (in chrome) that I should have next week or so. Once it is cleaned up, this kit is (all but) done!

I just need those bass hoop claws and I can call this one done I think.

May be jumping on a dead post here, but reading this has been very interesting. I've recently acquired a late '60s D-20 kit and am trying to go about restoring it. It's in pretty bad condition; been a bit beaten up over its life, but it's worth I shot to restore I reckon.

I'll post some photos up if there's any interest, but for now, here's my description.

Shell sizes: 20x14" bass, 12x8" rack tom, 14x14" floor tom.

Almost all of the original shell hardware is still there (apart from reso side bass drum lugs, hoop, and all the hoop claws... oh and all the badges which is annoying). The shell hardware on the toms is all original, but heavily corroded on the inside. No original rack-tom mounting hardware. No original snare (the kit came with a rare 1950s(??) era President/Dallas snare in very good condition).

The main problem I'm having, is that I took the shell hardware off the 12" rack tom to clean it, only to find that the machine screws holding the lugs on are a very non-standard 0.75 pitch thread (standard M4 screws come in 0.7 and 0.5 pitch). No one that I've talked to here in NZ can supply such screws, and a brief look on the internet hasn't given me much hope of finding any. The only option I seem to have is to re-tap the lugs to a standard M4 thread, though that might get messy.

The annoying thing is that some of the machine screws broke off when I removed the lugs from the shell. Perhaps I was too hasty taking them off; should've thought before I did it, etc. For this reason, I haven't started doing the same on the 14" floor tom, which is in worse condition.

Cheers.

Funny! Look what just came up for sale on my local classifieds! If anyone is interested in this kit, I could probably help broker. Can't tell from the pics what the cymbals are, but they look vintage as well. Looks like some original hardware. Cost of drums plus shipping might be prohibitive though, as the kit is listed at $300, but seller may go lower as the market is very slow here.

PM me if you're interested.

Hey, I'm in NZ too. Welcome to VDF. Definitely post pics here and you'll get help for sure. I have a stash of C series BD lugs that should work but look a little different to the D series ones. Let's see what you have. Maybe start a fresh thread.

Looks like a good deal to me. Forum member Wayne might be keen on those and he's in your part of the world. I'd buy them if they were here.

Cheers mate. I've started a new thread, added a few photos and some more info (perhaps ad nauseum haha). Not if it's kosher to link to other threads, but here's the hyperlink:
