Yamaha D-20 restoration / modernization

The new screws are larger diameter thsan the vintage ones. I'd have to change a lot of stuff to make it all work...

I picked up a Gibraltar flat base cymbal stand today, and also more used tom mount stuff (two triple mounts and two tom ball mounts- new style but not YESS length). A hack saw will adjust the length as needed...x-mas3

My Gibraltar bass drum cymbal mount and arm came today. Fortunately, the arm rod fits the stock Yamaha mount (although a bit loose in the bore) and looks like its going to work well.Party

UPDATE:

I finished the 14 today, as well as the bass shell. I still need to rework the hoops and do final assembly. I am leaving the rail off the bass, so if anyone has any good ideas for small black rubber plugs maybe? That would be cool!

I noticed the bass badge is slightly different too.... If I were to guess (and that's what I'm doing) I'd say it was earlier than the other drums. S/N is also very low...

Oh, I also hack-sawed one of the cheap Yamaha tom arms I had so it is now a YESSS mount (extra "S" faw 'sawed' to length). But I learned I need to make a bit of a point on the end like it was to push the plastic out of the way inside the mount... Or leave it in the drum... I'll get to that at some point!

I edited my wanted post earlier, as some parts have been found.

I have a piece of wrap coming in from a 13" tom to use for my bass inlay. I was thinking it might be cool to use that to make a 4-9/16 X 13 snare drum!

I'm going to look into a drilled and prepped shell from Precision now...

Anyone have eight old Yamaha snare lugs??

So, while looking at the Precision site for snare drum pricing, I noticed their custom bass drum hoops are VERY reasonably priced!

Therefore, I'm going to have them make me some hoops with the correct inlay width (which is about 15/16"- quite wide!) and a more modern square front edge. I will probably go in person to make sure the width is correct (and just for fun too!)

Therefore, the bass claws I received will work great, but the old (original ones) now wont!

The good news is the 'square' ones seem more available, so if anyone has (8) square Y badge bass hoop claws, I need them!

I'm happy to swap for my curved ones too if you need these curved ones. I don't need the T-rods, bu will take them if I have to.

Thanks!

I'm going to do a "wanted" post now, as I think the visibility of this thread is poor.

Another update!

As I threatened, I went to Precision drum in new York and had some hoops made. Andrea in the office is very pleasant and the guys downstairs are super nice as well. George allowed me to watch as he whipped up my new hoops, and even allowed me to snap a few pics... They were assembling a clear acrylic floor tom with tube lugs while I was there (anyone here??) and you can also see a clear bass drum awaiting work in one of my photos.

George even slit out the wrap material from the old shell wrap I had, so it is perfectly straight and smooth- WAYYY better than if I was trying to do it with a straight edge and razor...DOH

They also quoted me on doing a matching snare drum (very reasonable I must say) and I cannot recommend them more highly! Just a few guys making great drums. Attention to detail abounds- on my hoops, the inlay groove was so perfect, the inlay virtually stayed in place with no adhesive. I'd call that perfect, but George applied his experience and said it had to be a hair wider to allow for paint... Then, on the clear floor tom that was being assembled in the next room, the badge was rejected by the assembler (I forgot his name, and apologize for that) due to imperfect paint on the badge. This happened while I was here for hoops, as the course of normal business. They clearly CARE about what they do, and probably had no idea that detail might make an impact on me, but it did! Yes Sir

Keller shells are their mainstay, but they can get other wood shells if desired (I asked about Birch for my snare and that is no problem). Tons of Keller maple shells in stock (see below) for those emergency drum orders! Walking

Getting the hoops ready...

Two coats of sanding sealer and then sanded with 400 quickly.

THEN I taped off the inlay groove- reason being that on the original hoops, with the inlay over the black paint, the color of the wrap looks much darker (sort of cranberry) rather than matching the drums, which are wrapped over the wood. So, I am applying the hoop inlay over the wood, so the color matches better!Clapping Happy2

NOTE: I AM STILL LOOKING FOR THE LATER 'SQUARE EDGE' (used on later metal hoop bass drums) HOOP CLAWS FOR THIS BUILD!

I seem to be the only one replying to my own thread, but at least I'll have a record of what I did in the event of a tragically fatal electric toothbrush accident...

Anyway, in these photos you can see the hoops as they were completed. The last photo shows the comparison of the inlay when applied over black paint (stock configuration- in the left of the photo) as opposed to over the bare wood strip (two new hoops in the middle and right). Since the wrap is applied to bare wood shells, the color matches very nicely with my 'unpainted' strip hoops now rather than looking like a 'cranberry' color. I am please with the results...
