[QUOTE=jccabinets;253054] I have an Apollo red sparkle kit, 22,13,16. The red sparkle is really pretty and I hate to throw it away, but, with the issuse going on with the holes and damage to the base drum.. considering wraping all drums with veneer. What do you guys think, save the wrap? QUOTE]

Save the wrap! Save the wrap! The wrap is really one of the only things that distinguishes the 60's and early 70's MIJs from later 70's and 80's MIT drums. Really, they're all luan and sort of sound similar. The wraps are a big part of the vintage appeal. Save the wrap whenever possible. There are many, many MIJ/MIT sets out there that have been stripped of their wraps to be painted black, or covered in contact paper, or fur, or god knows what else. Just wait and one will be along any moment - oh look! there goes one now!

Save the wrap. Sorry, end of rant.

BTW, I have one of these I am parting out and will be selling parts, orphans off soon. (12,12,14,20,14sn) It is blue sparkle. I am sure someone will chastize me for doing so, and I will answer after the spanking!

Breaking up a matching set with snare??? C'mon, be a stand up guy and sell the set as a project. Parts are out there and available, and keeping a set together is very satisfying.

Ok - I will relish and share my thrill of a deal. God is good (has helped to pay the bills) and has that bonus - the Root Beer Whitehall.

I scored everything here for a mere $80. The guy was super cool (gtr player) and when I expressed that I did not want all of that stuff (asking price was 200) he mentioned something about....ok, well then I am just gonna haul the rest of it off to the end of the driveway. I said "hold on....nobody needs to get hurt here!" That was like a 'put the gun down' moment....a temporary lose of sanity! So I told him I will give him the 75 we negotiated to, and he would keep the double pedal. I gave him 80 and said he could keep the change if he had no 5....After 5 more minutes of discussion he said - 'you know what...I'm gonna let you have that double pedal too' WOW!

Obviously have made my money back and now continuing to pay bills and considering a few items to keep.

So, The RB Whitehall.....no snare, no floor. So get this - I was going to just use the 14 as a FT and use a chrome snare BUT.... then I find a guy on DFO with a 16FT and I decided to cut the 14in tom into a snare. This will actual yield some wrap to provide for the inlays on the BD hoops. It will be a happy ending. Gray painted interiors. The thicker 6 or 9 ply, sizes are 13,(16FT to come)24BD, and the 14sn that I will cut to about a 6.5 I suppose. How cool will that be!?!?!?!!! I have never had a 24 BD. I figure I have to keep it because we all know that it is next to impossible to mail a 24in BD - and I am not going to play the waiting game for a local sale.

I have not even started.....too much other stuff going on....I am underemployed and need to address that as fast as I can. That takes up alot of my time now of course.

I heading up north for the WE with the kids....so I actually will be online, but will not be near any drums. ...and I will be limited as far as access goes (late at night).

Everyone have a beautiful, safe weekend!

Blessed,

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

jccabinets: Yes, that wrap is still worth saving.

John: Ha! I have a 14" FT converted into a snare too. Even worse than the 12". Check it out...

Here is my other Apollo kit that I restored, same red sparkle. I know what you mean when you say save the wrap, the red sparkle wrap on these drums is beautiful.

What to do about the huge hole in the bass drum? And those holes in the tom?

Beautiful Apollos! See, that wrap just looks right. And you gotta love the adjustable butt on your snare!

Interesting that you have the teardrops on your snare and floor, but he Sling copies on the bass and rack. Hmm..

I would say that hole in the BD can simply be drilled out to be nice and round - then install an eyelet and let it be a large vent hole. It's not like you can fill it and fill it's wrap. It would never turn out as nice looking as an eyelet, I mean a VENT :) - yeah, that's what it is!
