End of discussion of Vintage MIJ / Stencils?

Loading...

I am not complaining here (well maybe a little wining).......

It just seems that this topic used to be discussed alot on here (in this section) and in the last 6 months or so, it just has seemed to drop off the map here.

Is it possible that most have already learned this quite well enough that there is no longer much discussion of the topic? It is a topic I am rather fond of and now find myself having to go back (search) to read more about it.

BTW, I have one of these I am parting out and will be selling parts, orphans off soon. (12,12,14,20,14sn) It is blue sparkle. I am sure someone will chastize me for doing so, and I will answer after the spanking!

No worries, John.

A few of the "Big Hitters" of the MIJ forum speak have taken time off due to health issues and ... other stuff. They pop in every once in a great while.

The current influx of members tend to lean heavily on opinion and somewhat disregard the historical research piece a bit more than say a year or two ago. It goes in waves. Heck, five years ago "MIJ" was a cuss word on here. So, there is a bit of growth witnessed.

I am working on yet another MIJ refurb for the young guns. This one will be a custom red sparkle that JStix and I developed about four years ago. It's gonna be a smoker.

What's the condition of the kit that you will be parting with?

I scored the blue sparkle kit in a lot of stuff, which included a Root Beer Whitehall kit I am keeping. What attracted me so much to the deal was that the blue kit is the 3 ply with re-rings....except for one of the toms is the thicker 6 or 9 ply with no rings. Thing is, it needs alot of parts. I was going to give someone a bargain because it would need so much money in parts - alot of lugs (half of them missing), T-rods, etc. So, instead, since my buyer was dragging his feet big time, I told him I am selling it off elsewhere and now he will have to buy one of my other kits - modern ones for like 250 or 300.

Anyhow - decided I would orphan it out and keep some of the parts for myself. I will be selling the 14 FT and 14 snare - both 6 luggers, some lugs and such, and perhaps the BD shell. It's a no-brainer to keep the wood hoops, as well as some Slinger-imitation tom lugs. The lugs on the BD are the double ended ones usually found on snares, with long T-rods - a totally custom job by a previous owner somewhere down the line. I already pulled the Slingerland cymbal arm mount off of it! I think 5 of the BD claws are American vintage something. The FT has faded to a purplish color.

Speaking of red sparkle....need any shells for it? I have 2 snare shells and a 13 inch tom shell.....no hardware, just bare shells. And BTW - the 6 lug snare shell is loosing shape (you know how they buckle sometimes) and this could serve as a donor for wrap....piece together enough for an inlay or something. let me know if you need any of that...just pay for shipping and you could have it for free (cover the PP fee please). The good snare shell is an 8 lug 3 ply with re-rings, as is the 13 tom (6 lug).

Yeah, Mikey, Jonnistix (John)....the health issues. I am SO relieved that both are ok - Mikey from the mysterious disappearance and John surviving the tornadoes (and other issues). Some on here may not know that both of these guys are really good guys - John is a giant in my eyes, a heart the size of Texas. Mikey is not the villain that some think he is. He makes up for his lack or organization and long turnarounds by the tremendous knowledge and part supply that he contributes to this community. Other than the wait, he is very professional with great packaging - very pro.

BTW - the double ended snare lugs on the BD - no, this is not a 6 lug club style. This is 12 of those lugs mounted in the holes that the BD lugs used to be in. Then T-rods on one end go entirely through one lug and screws into the one of the other side. VERY strange!

Nice jellybean kit there! I bet it sounds great! If you want to look for matching colors to complete something......here....let me share a secret - but probably won't be one for long!

www.yakaz.com

It searches several different sites and you can customize your searchings too. I have found some really great bargains using it.

All the inserts were pointed in the normal direction=====just that one of the lugs (one side) had lugs with NO inserts, as the long rod just passed right through it.

I am looking at some CL listings tonight, have not in a long time. There are some nice flipping opportunities. I just wish I had a couple hundred dollars of capital! It sure is nice to be able to build collections funded purely by flip profit. This is all thanks to the knowledge we learn at sites like this one. Great site!

I will get in on this too.

I have an Apollo red sparkle kit, 22,13,16. But the spur mount busted through the bass drum shell on one side and the 13" tom was drilled for a Yamaha mount. The floor tom has no badge and might not be an Apollo. I have all of the parts to make up a kit. The red sparkle is really pretty and I hate to throw it away, but, with the issuse going on with the holes and damage to the base drum, I am considering on using the a different bass drum shell and wraping all drums with veneer. What do you guys think, save the wrap?

Jeff C

I do need a few parts like spurs for the base drum and a few others.

Thank you!

I have been looking for a local 60's MIJ kit or orphans here as another project. My boys and their friends know if they see anything free drum wise to grab it for me. This was a roadside save they brought home to me. 7"x12" shell, very thin with re rings. Sitting on the side of the road as trash. It was a hurtin pup when I got it but cleaned up ok. Wrap is fairly intact. Has a cool sound as a little add on concert tom. Original it had the diamond plate tom mount but a Pearl style was added. Few extra holes too. ;) I'll get a rim and T rods and add it to the project pile. It's a start anyway. But thinking a cool MIJ jelly bean kit is the way to go.

I always enjoy reading about them here and thanks to the guys who take the time to explain and chart the history.

BTW....just to add. I think things here have been a little slow overall lately. Summer is almost here and maybe people are getting out and playing more?

Hi Drummerjohn333,

good questions!

As RogerSling says: it goes in waves.

We all have learned a lot through this forum and there's a nice and great collection of information available, if someone new wants to go into deep with vintage: he doesn't have to ask anymore - it's all (all? - not all, but a lot) written down, in the meantime.

Now that many MIJ kits have popped up, perhaps it's time to go on to the next step? - But what's next?

Maybe a hipe (run) on MIJ drums, but price-wise with extra money ...?

Maybe the cheaper cymbals from that era?

Or genuine hardware, if still in a good shape?

Or an earlier decade in drum building, as the 60's and 70's have been 'discussed out' for the time being?

The suspense continues.
