End of discussion of Vintage MIJ / Stencils?

The hole in the bass is the old hole for the spurs, right? It wont be seen really. Patch it up if possible, or leave it. The hole on the tom I would probably leave as well. Another mount will cover it up at least partially.

Oh, whoops, the mount is already on it... I'd still just leave it. Part of the drum's history. These old MIJs have been played and/or abused for 40 plus years. They are gonna have scars/imperfections. That's one really nice thing about MIJs, unless they have been decimated, they are all players.

Yes the big hole in the bass drum is where the spur mount poked thru. I was thinking about making a large aluminum plate to "extend the spur mount flange. The small holes in the tom tom are more of a pain, maybe just bolt the Yamaha mount back on it, I dont know.

Back to the bass drum, as you can see it is dirty and discolored but some sanding and colored lacquer could make it much better.

Thank you!

My original plan was to sell it as a whole kit (the blue sparkle). But, here are the problems:

- Needs parts

- I could use some of the parts myself!

- The 2 toms are not a match - both 12s - one is has the rings, one does not....very strange, as I recall another blue sparkle here on this forum that someone had the SAME case!

- I could not expect all that much money for it as the next owner would need to buy so many parts for it....thus driving down the value that someone would pay for it. I can make alot more money selling the pieces - and remember, it will help someone finish other kits off.

- The FT is so faded that it is now a purple sparkle, not blue. It really sucks, as that may be a difficult match for someone - or would be a good drum to re-wrap.

This last one is a biggy.

You see - it's not a slam dunk of a decision. On the flip side...benefits of braking it up:

- Provides needed orphans for somebody else.

- No longer a need for a bunch of parts to be bought

- Provides ME with some parts

- Helps me pay more bills - it is getting very deep (my debt). I am running a deficit every month....and that is working 2 jobs. Now school is out (no more subbing) and am down to a part time job only. I really do not want to be evicted and the only reason I am not is because he is a family friend for several decades now. This is small town. Then there is being behind in child support.....I need max $ for anything I sell. Not being greedy - trying to pay bills!

BTW - this score of a deal included the red FT - you may recall I had a thread about IDing it....and then it was up for sale - no bites. I decided to sell off the parts and it is really helping me pay bills.

cn679 - Phil Collins would dig that Stewart snare kit! Remember he made snares of all his toms (I am not imagining things right - that really happened didn't it?) - or was that just a bunch of reverb????

I'll jump in here as well...

I've been back and forth lately myself, as we're now back in full remodel mode here. AND WE WILL FINISH BY FALL! YES!!!

Anyway, no real expert here, but I do have a few parts, if they are needed. Lugs and such, especially. Tons of lugs.

I also have some MIJ red sparkle if anyone wants it. I pulled it off of a pretty messed up drum... I don't remember if it was a FT or BD, but it's free to someone that can show a need, and is willing to pay the postage.

Yeah Jeff, save the wrap.

I only part 'em out if they're beyond hope. But I've done quite a bit of that... lots of MIJ stuff was sold here in the 60's and 70's. You still find complete kits mostly, but tons of orphan stuff too. If the drums are just gone, I'll part 'em out and give the shells to the guys (young college kids mostly, building kits) that work at Dana's shop.

I do have to say, those veneer kits that Jeff and Bill do are just gorgeous.

As far as what kits get discussed, I've been highly entertained by our European members and their area's kits lately. Especially the former eastern block stuff. Nobody's ever heard or seen most of that stuff here on the west coast.

Speaking of Root Beer finishes... I had a nice MIJ kit some years back, wrapped in a wonderful Root Beer Swirl finish. No tags or anything on the shell to suggest which stencil kit it was. I purchased the COS "Norma" snare drum, since the lugs looked somewhat like those on the the rest of the kit. The bass and toms were thin 3-ply Luan, with hardwood re-rings. The bass drum, as you can see, had three rings. It was a good sounding kit! I sold it to a neighbor, who got pretty good with them. I would hear him practicing in the afternoon and he really had a GK flair to his playing!

From jccabinets

What to do about the huge hole in the bass drum? And those holes in the tom?

Jeff I still have those wrap samples you sent me for the paint test. There's a piece of your SL wrap that's red sparkle on 1 side. I can send them back to you. The wrap test I was doing hit kind of a dead end anyway. Lemme know!!
