Yamaha D-20 restoration / modernization

Helo everyone!

I am starting the thread to document the progress on my old Yamaha kit.

I have dissassembled the 12" tom and polished up the original wrap. It has a lot of scratches (and snare scar) and minor delamination in one area (looks like it was dropped with no resonant head installed) but I'll be repairing that next (I did not notice it as it is a small area and fine cracks). Here's the polished wrap:

I am in need of a few parts to complete this build:

5) intact original logo resonant head for the bass drum. (I am going to clean and cut mine for now)

The below items are not critical at all:

1) 12" 6-hole hoop (I have two new Pearl Superhoops for now)

3) a 16" floor tom (I just missed on on eBay)- lowest priority

4) Matching snare drum- would be nice to have but I have pleanty of snare drums now...

5) Correct cymbal mount for the bass- I have a Gibraltar one for now.

I can move this to 'wanted' as well, but this is fine for the moment.

I am rim mounting the 12, with a more modern Yamaha ball mount.

I took the giant steel mounting plate off and the wrap looks nearly identical under there (very little fading of the color) This should look good in a dark room!Excited

Thank you Andrew. I grabbed those this morning... (Is that a forum member??) I will update my list above.

still need a (matching) or pair of (not necessarily matching) 20" bass hoops. That is the hold up on this kit now. I think I can find some sort of spurs that will fit in the drum until an original appears.

Looks like a match to me too!

Even the internal muffler looks the same (weird tannish-green paint and two gray felt pads)

I'd possibly be interested in the wrap (Id have to make three or four strips to go around a 20" hoop) and the muffler. Maybe six tension screws too, but I need to look at them again.

PM me if you prefer...

Thanks!:)

EDIT=> The tension screws look the same too. I'd like to have six (or all 12). Then I just need a 12" hoop!

Ok a minor update:

I was asking others about CLR for cleaning rusty hardware and lug mounting screws and ended up trying it myself.

DAMN it works well. The internal hardware was all mostly brown with light surface rust and after it looks quite nice!

After that test I did the 16 tension screws for the floor tom. Those were in for two days I guess, and those look like brand new. The interesting thing I discovered is that the washers for these screws are conical shaped somewhat and appear to be brass or something- not steel (based on the color).

I also grabbed a new 20" coated Emperor and some white felt strip from the fabric store. (I also got a couple squares of black for wrapping the lug springs- $0.44 each ~12X12 square!) And today I received a set of six t-rods and claws... But, they were from a steel hooped 22" bass, which apparently has a square profile (like a modern hoop) and not a rounded profile like my 20" wood hoop has... Not the end of the world, and the t-rods are perfect, so we'll see what happens.

And I found a pair of bass spurs that even have the rubber tips.

The Rim mount did not show today. Strange, but maybe the storm is to blame.

Trying to get a Land-Rover engine swap done too, so my time to work on this is limited unfortunately...
