Large Classic Lugs & Mini Classic's

I am very interested to see that Galaxy set. I am glad Ludwig re-issued that Black Galaxy Sparkle. I would love to have a complete set in that wrap. I have a 1966 Bass drum I restored in that wrap. Hopefully I will come across a floor and 12 or 13 tom one day.

The new Galaxy Sparkle looks really nice! For a high-end kit, there were still some issues I had to deal with first... edges not level! Ludwig wanted me to send the drums back to them, but that wasn't an option for me. Too far from California to N. Carolina! I honestly didn't feel that the "craftsmen" at Ludwig are capable of first-rate bearing edges. I had my friend, Chris Heuer, located in Burbank, level the edges. You'd never know they were even touched, as they look just like Ludwig's edges. Chris is a true master at what he does, which is why many of the top drummers seek him out!

Just need to add my rail consolette and spurs to the bass drum and the kit will be complete!

That's a shame about the edges on your drums. There is just no excuse for that. I thought Ludwig was back as far as makeing top of the line sets again. It's fortunate you knew someone like Chris Huer you could trust to clean them up. Maybe it was a fluke. Have you heard of this being a widespread problem on kit's. I think a few members here have purchased brand new Ludwig sets in the last couple of years.

IMO, Ludwig is back because they know how to promote and excite the public with their drums and history. I don't say this to get anyone mad, but from personal experience through my purchase and from first-hand knowledge from Chris Heuer, who works on new and vintage drums from many of the top drumming artists in the industry. Chris has told me that Ludwig is not alone when it comes to non-level bearing edges. What it boils down to is economics... the amount of time involved to check each shell, top and bottom, and make sure they are perfectly level. A qualified tech should be able to achieve this in only a few extra minutes per side. Multiply that by thousands of shells and you see how the expense can build up. The attitude is "they're good enough and most drummers won't know the difference". Well, I have news for you, most drummers today DO know the difference.

Another issue that all manufactures face is offering wrapped finishes. In the past, we could safely take our wrapped drums out in bright sunshine and not worry about the wrap bubbling, lifting, etc. No more! Due to the way Delmar makes wrap, and the way glue has to be manufactured, bubbling and lifting is the norm. Chris just told me about one of his client's new Ludwig kit, in Galaxy Sparkle (this client is also a Ludwig endorser) was used outdoors and the wrap has bubbled and lifted badly! Fortunately, my new Ludwig kit is for indoors only!

I do not wish to dissuade anyone from purchasing the kit of their dreams from any of the major drum manufacturers. Only to be aware that for them to sell at any given price-point means that some cuts must be made... usually in labor dollars.

I find it amazing that my PDP X7 kit, made in Taiwan, has near-perfect bearing edges on all 7 drums. All this for $899 delivered!

The bottom line is that it only cost me less than $100 to have my edges leveled on my Ludwig toms and snare drum and are now near-perfect! The bass drum, while not perfect, was close enough to not need any work. The kit will look/sound great when completed and will look pretty close to a mid-60's Downbeat kit... in Galaxy Sparkle!

Can't wait to see pics of your set. and about performing outdoors. I have had to start useing my PDP natural wood finished kit on my outdoor gigs.

The first gig I used my rewly rewraped Slingerland's on I thought was a covered venue. It was but not the sides and the sun was on the side of my bass and floor tom. I managed to get some shade on them quickly but I feel it may have caused the wrap to possibly give a little. I can't really tell but was not happy. Then a couple weeks ago I took my Gretsch Catalina Jazz kit to a outdoor gig and the wrap became loose on all the drums just from the heat! I am in southeast Florida on the coast. I finished the gig and as soon as I got them back inside the wrap tightened back up and was fine. So now I only use the wood PDP's on outside day gigs. I will use my frankenkit of Ludwig,Gretsch, and Camco at night outside weather permitting.

A lot of these venues here are outside and near or on the ocean and the venue owners don't get it or take into consideration the musicians equipment, the heat, etc. It is fun but not worth Having a heat stroke or damageing equipment. I have a nice powerful metal fan now I blow on my self and the kit..

I have never seen a 60's era Ludwig drum with mini lugs or anything before 1970.

Vibes,

You obviously missed the Ed Sullivan Show that historic night. Ringo's set proves the mini-lug's lineage to the early 60's.

I actually did see that first Ed Sullivan telecast. I was 7 . I remember My father who was a Methodist minister let church out early Sunday evening so everyone could go home and see The Beatles. I guess I just didn't realize the 12"s had mini lugs. Both of mine had the large lugs. I had been used to seeing 4 piece sets with the 13" toms and large lugs. I'm glad I realize that now about the mini lugs on the 12's. I wonder why my 71 and 80 12's had the large lugs.

Yeah I'm a little confused here to, I have a 1957 15x12 marching snare (now floor tom :D) that is a mini lug vs. the large. They have been around since that lug design was created in the 50's.

Here's a WFL on ebay with the same lugs.

Beau,

The smaller lugs were standard issue on the marching drums of that era. Why, I don't know but that's the way they were. I've handled plenty of them! Hey, is the one your talking about the one I left for you at Supersonic Music a while back?

Bill

Oh, and BTW -- I'm really not sure what the actual PROPER terminology for these lugs is, but I've always called them "small classic lugs" and not "mini classic lugs." The reason is because at some point in the late 80s/early 90s Ludwig actually produced a "mini classic lug" that is actually smaller yet than what we've been discussing... and I've got some of all three sizes in stock.

Man, that show is still etched in my memory, too! I think I was 8 at the time. What I remember about it most was my dad jumping up to turn the channel when all the girls started screaming! Well, my 12 year old sister then began screaming, and she got her way (with the help of my mom!) and we got to watch it anyway!
