Large Classic Lugs & Mini Classic's

This is actually a question about the lugs on the older Ludwig's. I notice a lot of folks are putting the smaller classic mini lugs on the 12" and smaller toms of there restorations or conversions of Standard Ludwigs and the larger ones on the rest of the toms. When I purchased my Ludwig Hollywood set in 1971 It had the large classic lugs on the 12" tom. When I purchased some add on concert toms in 74 they all had the mini classic lugs. The first I had seen. Then in 1980 after a club fire destroyed my original Hollywood's, I replaced them with the exact same set and the 12" tom still had the large lugs. Just wondering why people are useing the mini lugs instead of the large ones unless it is personal preference and not accuracy in the restoration or conversions. When did the mini lugs first show up?

No expert, but all of the first issue Standard kit 12's were the basic Standard lug. That would be the justification of using the Classic lug to replace it ... same hole spacing. The mini lug has different hole spacing. Like you, I've seen 12's carry mini's and I've seen 12's carry Classic's. I honestly do not know the impetus of this and can only speculate that it was Ludwig and there was usually no rhyme or reason as to what they did from day to day (humor).

In the old days, the 12" toms came standard with the mini-classic lugs. When the Standard series came along and then went, Ludwig had a lot of shells pre-drilled for the standard lugs, which happens to be the same bolt pattern as the large classic lugs. So...what do you do with extra Standard shells? You badge and finish them as classic series drums and fit the large classic lugs of course!

Now adays, you can order the classic maple, and the Legacy classic drums with either style lugs, although they all come standard with the mini-classic lugs, the large ones being an extra cost option.

The old days? lol Do you mean the 80's or 90's? I have never seen a Ludwig mini lug on a drum before the 74 concert tom's I purchased new then. Ludwig-dude, you must be a lot younger than most of us. I was sort of referring to Poppy's thread where he plugged the holes in his 12" Ludwig Standard tom then drilled for mini lugs when it was already drilled for the large one's. Just had a hard time wraping my mind around that. and have heard of others doing similiar things. I realized the mini lugs have a different hole spaceing. They are the same as the Camco spaceing. I actually have a Camco tom I have mini lugs on.

I have never seen a 60's era Ludwig drum with mini lugs or anything before 1970.

Not saying they were not, but I don't think so. Does anyone know the date of the first mini lugs on a Ludwig drum or kit?

I think you need to revisit the VDG main page and check out the Ludwig catalog scans again. Small classic lugs were the norm on the 8x12 toms and some of the deeper 6 1/2" and up concert snare drums from the days of WFL up to the mid 1970's. Large classic lugs on the smaller size toms really didn't become a normal thing until the advent of the 6ply shells, although as I stated before, they did use them on some of the 3ply shells that were originally destined to be Standard series drums in order to use up the pre-drilled shells. As far as my age, I am 42, but I've been playing Ludwig drums since I was a small child, so yes I've seen them myself and am not imagining things. :p

Like I said ,"I am not sure but I don't think so. If so I know now. But I swear I never remember seeing any on the 12" drums until the 70's. I still wonder when they started putting the mini's on drums. I was just picking at ya about the back in the day. I had no clue which back in the day you meant without a year. :-)

Mini Classic lugs were most definitely the standard on 12" toms during the 60's and part of the 70's. I recently received my Maple Classic, in Downbeat sizes, and specified the Mini's on the 12" tom and Classics on the bass drum and 14" floor tom. The kit is wrapped in the beautiful Galaxy Sparkle finish. I've been doing some customization and only have the bass drum left to complete. Once done, pictures will be posted so that all can see the mini's on the rack tom and classics on the bass and floor tom. The matching snare drum was done in an 8-lug Jazz Festival style.

I am very interested to see that Galaxy set. I am glad Ludwig re-issued that Black Galaxy Sparkle. I would love to have a complete set in that wrap. I have a 1966 Bass drum I restored in that wrap. Hopefully I will come across a floor and 12 or 13 tom one day.

It is a classic 14"x22" . It is drilled for a 4 hole railmount, which I have one but use a snare stand for my tom, and I put a Ludwig cymbal mount on it where it was drilled for and a L rod cymbal holder. I play it out on gigs a lot.
