I might be a good wood worker but most of you guys are awsome pro drummers and I wish I had you talent.

Sorry guys this project is going to take some time. I have a ton of work to do for my real job. Eventually I am going to make up a steam box and try getting the drum back in round. But for now its all cabinets.

Jeff the RK artical is live again on the NSMD site, take a look. I hear you on the timeframe. It's good you have work and are busy. Take it while you can or they find someone else! I had a few unexpected home repairs last few weeks that really drained my budget. I'm on the sidelines again until I get things wrapped up with the house and again save some drum bucks. With Christmas right around the corner it'll be later than sooner too!!

Thank you, I read the article and was surprised to see how his box was constructed. I had envisioned making a box big enough to place the entire drum in, getting the temp up to 212 and leave it in there for about 15 minutes. Remove the drum and insert my round ¾” plywood circle, let sit for a few hours then remove it. Then I was going to make a plywood circle to bend the rings around after they come out of the box. Once the rings and shell are formed to a round shape, then proceed to glue the rings into place.

I don’t get how his works, I would think you need to steam both sides of the shell for it to work.

Thanks again,

Jeff C

Well one decision has been made. I will be installing new wrap on all of the shells. I made an attempt to remove the original wrap without tearing it. It came off in one piece but somehow it shrinks because if you take and wrap around the drum again the holes do not line up. It must be that the heat gun expands the wrap but shrinks during the cool down.

But that’s Okay, I am excited to visualize the 59 Krupa with the early 60’s shells all with matching wrap. Cant wait to get this going but first I need to experiment with the steam box and get the shell back together. Should be loads of fun.

Nice I was hoping you'd rewrap it. Seems hard to avoid with the work the shell needs. Hey at least you got the wrap off in one piece that's cool. I was wondering if original wrap removal would line right back up or close enough anyway. Good to know thanks. Anyhooo.... this kit will look nice rewraped the same. Are you using WMP for sure? I got my 13" tom together last night with some MIJ hoops (temp till I get some hoop clips) and new Evans heads just to see how it sounded. It has such great tone and sustains for days. I love it. You'll really like the sound of the solid maple snare too. Mine is the same size and I'm hooked on the sound~!

Jeff, once you fix that one ply steam bent you will find you have an insatiable addiction to that sound.

Can't wait to see it fixed.

Well I had a little interruption by finding those Ludwigs last thursday but now I am getting back to the steam box build. As far as color, I am thinking a wrap called blue white pearl from Precission. But I will have plenty of time to think about it, spent my wrap funds on a Ludwig blue oyster kit. I hope to do the steaming this weekend.

Well I have made a steam box and have tried to bend the shell back into round. The glue let loose during the steam bath and I had a hard time getting it back together. It is interesting how that old hide glue will let go under steam but then re-adhere after it cooled down.

I have ended up doing pretty much what Mikey777 has suggested.

I have a question, the shell is a bit out of round but can be flexed into round by placing a round peice of plywood inside of it. I am wondering if I were to install the re-rings with the plywood circle inside, would the re-rings keep it round after the plywood circle is removed.

I will post some pics later on of my steam box and clamping jigs.
