Advice on how to Refresh Slingerland Copper Wrap

Loading...

Hi.

I recently bought me a Slingerland in sizes 24", 13", 14" and 18" for 100 euro ( about 110$). It is a black and silver oval badge, Niles IL 70's, and serial numbers are 185XXX , so I guess thats from 1973, or something like that.

Finnish is Copper, and as the most Slingerland people knew, those Copper finish usualy have bad bad pitting. And so mine too. I do not think any kind of polish could help itcrying2-07

I realy like how they sound, And like sizes too. So , when I´ll be ready with my Psychedelic Red Ludwig, then I may be recover´d them.

But I have been read somewhere ( not in this forum) that its very very hard to remove that steel finish from Slingerland?

Help2Any one who knew more about that copper finish? Why should it be SO difficult to remove it? And what´s the best way to do it?Help2

You can see it here http://www.freewebs.com/groovesuperfly/slingerland.htm

There was a fellow from Sweden (I think??) that posted here some time ago who had restored a copper kit. He did a beautiful job of bringing it back. It really looked fantastic... and as I recall it was very rough when he started. I don't remember if he recovered some drums or found a method to clean and polish the pitted copper but in the end it was BEAUTIFUL!!

Maybe use the "search" feature on the gray toolbar above and look for the word "copper".

If you get in touch with that fellow he might have some ideas for you.

I'll look around some to, when I get a chance.

**Found it.. CarstenM from Denmark... thread was titled "From Beast to Beauty" have a look.

Below.. Hey Vipe.. yeah it was, some mad drum working skills CarstenM displayed. VERY COOL!!

Superfly, I think I would try to revive the original finish before giving up and re-wrapping it!

I will try to get contact him.

If it´s possible to save the original copper finish, of course I will do it, But it seems to be in a so bad shape, that it´s imposible. But I will take a closer look at that thread.

But if I understaid it right, he´s set WAS recoverd with wrap over the copper ? And he just removed wrap?!?

As is true for most metal objects, it can be buffed out, maybe not to perfection, but it might be good enough and keep the vintage originality of the kit. This kit will only be original ONCE and if that's taken away it cannot be returned.

A restored original Copper kit is worth more than the same kit in a shiny new re-wrap no matter WHAT the color.

Hi Superfly.

Congratulations with your rare Slingerland copper on maple - drums. The series was called Concorde, and was produced only in ´72 - ´73.

Basicly we´re dealing with Slingys from their best period - but the copper plating - or what to call it - was not realy a succes: Adding a 1,2 mm thick genuine metal plate to the outside of a drum, does certaintly not increase the natural sustain of the drum, and that was - as far as I know - the reason why the Niles Guys stopped making the Concorde series in ´73. besides that, copper reacts instantly on oxygene and moisture, wich means that every little scratch in the protecting layer of laquer, that was sprayed on to them, has an evil tendense to develope into ugly black or dark green spots -- that is probably what has happened to yours, but I need to see some pictures to be certain. On top of that, it seams as if theese drums are more sensitive to changes in temperature, because that the copper plate can´t follow the ex/contractions of the wooden shell, and therefore slips/get loose.

Since we´re talking about a genuine copper plate, there is no problem in polishing away this patina, but then you need to polish down the entire drum, and have a pro painter to re-laquer it --- but then again; the problem returns with the first scratch.

When I restored my own Concordes, I chose to accept the fact that they have some ugly spots here and there, and that that´s just part of the drums history. The thought of recoating them never realy came to my mind

, not because it can´t be done, but because the true value of a vintage drum, lies hidden in its history.

Anyway, if you insist on removing the copper plating, make shure that you have a coupple of days off, and a - what to call it? - very good heat pistol --- but please don´t do it.

By the way. Does your 18" tom have 3 or 4 legs?

Good luck

Yours Carsten M

Hi.

You can see some pictures on http://www.freewebs.com/groovesuperfly/

Unfortantley, in MINE opinion they are in so bad shape, that there is no way to rescue them. As you said, some scratches here and there, is acceptable. But those have more that "some " pitting and scratch.

But I will do as you suges, remove lugs and so on on one tom, and try to polish it, and see if its possible to make some progress.

What kind of polish to use? Ordinary car rubber/cleaner , or is it to strong? Maybe a cleaner / polish for metalic paint? And finaly, if they will look better, how to protect them after? To buy a car clear lack, and spray on it, or go to some car painter, and make it professional?

Your drums are looking great on pictures, and I would like to keep them in original finish, if its possible, but as they are looking now, its a shame.

18" tom have 4 legs. Unforatnly, some screws are missing, so there is some torx rusty screws today.

They're really not THAT bad!! Most of that is surface scrapes and such. You may have to seek out the advise of those who know metals best, like a car paint repair person or someone who knows how to buff out metals, but I don't see too much of a problem . . . but then I'm no expert.

But I'd certainly give it a try, if you don't try you'll NEVER know!!

Any one familiar with something called Brown Tripoli polishing bar?? I had never heard of it until I googled "polishing copper".

Google that up and see if it looks like something that would bring these up like new. I think you can make them really beautiful. It seems like a rare enough kit that even moderate success could be tolerated.

Yes, they are mine.

That picture is from Internet, "BUY AND SELL".

But as you can see at the second, closer pictures, there is much more scratch, rust and pitting then you can see on that first picture.

Brown Tripoli???

Any one know what it´s made of ??? And whats it´s made for?

I am not so sure that any one will know what i am meaning,if I ask for it here in Sweden... they may think thats opium or something like that, I am looking for Eye Ball...

It will be easier if I can explain more what it made of, and for.
