Restoring a 1959 Slingerland Snare

Hi guys, some of you saw my "Slingerland Shells ?" thread, well I thought I would start a new one over here on the restore of the snare drum. This snare was the only drum with good wrap so I am keeping it all origional but will re-wrap the other shells along with a bass drum shell that is coming soon.

So, on with the snare. First off, Im not sure I can save this shell or not.

From looking at the catalogs here on VDF and knowing the year(1959) I have reason to belive this is a Super Gene Krupra, please correct me if I am wrong.

First you will see the solid maple shell has the rings falling off of it and its out of round. I went ahead and removed the ring all the way so I could sand it and the shell, making a clean surface to re-glue. Then, I removed the hardware and made a 12.75" circle out of 3/4" maple plywood. I made it small so I would be able to insert small 1/8" thick shims around it.

Below is a pic of the circle with the shims holding the shell in a round position. It took alot of force to get it like this. Dont know how Im gonna do this with glue, guess I will need very slow setting glue for sure. Thought about using my micro pin nailer to help hold the ring in place as I am getting the circle and shimms into position. My concern is the amount of force needed to get the ring and shell back into round.

Wonder if I should soak the wood (ring and shell) in water, then clamp it in round, let it dry, then glue it up??? Any suggestions?

Jeff are you somehow able to fit a drumhead on both ends of the shell? Or is it too out of round for that?

I read an article a couple of years ago in NSMD about a RK shell repair.

The cat had a steambox/form he used to coax a shell back into round and the results were good.

Perhaps you could contact George Lawrence through NSMD or his shop website about the article.... might be of some help to you?

Here's a link to his repair shop.... might get you going down the path...

Jeff - The hot-soak sounds like the way to go. It'll make manipulating it into round easier and it'll dry into shape the way you put it.

Jeff, How does the heads fit on the drum? We you removed the ring how does the heads fit then?.How out of round is the shell with out the ring in it? Did the ring pull away from the shell or did the shell pull away from the ring?I know so many questions to ask but i have repaired many of these snares in the pass. I think i can help you repair this one.Mikey
