Converting Ludwig Standard to Luddy Classic

I'm reminded of a 15" marching snare that I recently converted to a tom.

I spent hours filling the extra holes, then redrilling the whole shell for the mini Classics.

I put heads on it, to test the sound...PERFECT! :)

Then I disassembled it, and installed the new wrap from Jammin' Sam. After meticulously reinstalling all of the hardware, I found that the heads no longer fit. The wrap made it too tight and won't tune up!!! :mad:

So, basically, it'll work painted, or with the over-sized heads--which I don't care to install.

Current gigging set:
Recent Ludwig Accent 13/16/18/26, (in Silver Sparkle), "updated" 70's Acrolite with cast batter hoop and Trick strainer/butt

Cymbals:
Zildjian K Custom Ride, Dream (Bliss and Contact) crashes and hats, and a Sabian Swish/China.

60's Ludwig Champagne Sparkle "Traveler's Club Date", under construction. Click Here

Two 1960's mahogany 32" Ludwig bass drums with Imperial lugs.

I had a ebony pinstrip head that fit fine. I put that on there and now im done...

I have another standard snare that someone removed the wrap off of. I am planning to wrap it in Mod orange or Phsyc red and replace the lugs with bowtie lugs. Looks just like a jazzfest. It wont be the real thing but will look good with my collection.

Well its summer now. I have seen many pics of drum kits out by swimming pools. I have my pool all open and clean finally. I am planning on taking pics of my Citrus Mod Luddy's out by my pool this weekend. It's been 104 here in Texas the last few days. Definatly too dam hot to be working out in my garage. I have a few projects I plan on conquering this fall. I have a 1969 Luddy Silver Sparkle double bass with 7 toms that have been painted white, then black on the interiors. I will restore the interiors. That will be a lot of work when I get around to it.

Poppy,

I was just searching for some information on shell restoration and came upon this thread. For anyone needing to do some restoration and re-wrap, there is a great wealth of information here. Your methodology of dealing with dowel rods is really fantastic!

By the way, anyone aware of any videos detailing the installation of wrap with glue?
