Just got these home. 13-16-22 + 5.5X14 8 lug COS matching snare (not pictured). Overall excellent condition. Nice 6-ply Pearl stencil that sounds and looks great, IMO.

Cool kit Ryan. I have a similar Pearl branded kit in 20/12/13/16. I think the tom mount goes the other way around from how you have it set up but I guess it works either way. Good sounding kits - i use mine for live work a lot.

You are correct about the tom mount, Fayray. This is actually one of the arms that goes on an era-correct double tom mount. The single tom mounts are pretty hard to come by, so for now I'm having to make do with the backwards set up.

I have to do the same thing with my Astro 12-14-20 kit as well, until I find the single tom arms to mount them correctly.

Ah, I see. Good point. It obviously works either way. That Astro kit's a beauty, too.

Well done on the find.

That sure is one beautiful wrap and the condition is outstanding.

Bet you had one heck of a grin when you sighted this one.

Hey guys-

I couldn't resist commenting here. I have the same kit essentially, but in a Charcoal Pearl. She's been with me for 26 years. It is a 4 piece used with a metal snare which has the same lugs as her original snare - which I have, but whose wrap has been removed (the dumbest thing I have ever done). (See signature)

Ryan - beautiful find! I dig the wrap! There is something I am confused about though. Wait, I think I have it figured out. I have attached a pic of mine. See that you have the same mount on your BD, yet it is in the exact perfect center position. My guess is that yours is not the original mount, as if it were it would be mounted to the side like mine. Perhaps the holes all lined up.

My Dear God!!! That Astro is screamin' beautiful! Mine may get there if I ever get around to shining up the wrap.

Quick poll - if I have the chance to change over to the better mount (which followed in the next years) would you swap it out or not? I understand they worked much better - yeah, I have experienced falling with mine.(((See other pic)) I have already abandoned the all original plan as I have modern Tama spurs and wood hoops off another MIJ (original were metal).

One more thing - Ryan - curious to see the COS snare that matches. If it is what I think it is, I have 2 of them - good snares. Much better than modern standard cheap COSs.

Ok, very last thing (promise) I suggest rounding off the back edge on the BD for a better/meatier punch. Of course, as you all already probably know - these sound super nice and warm - but require edge inspection and commonly a recut. It makes all the difference in the world - with the heads tuned to the shell and studio rings - just love them to death - record very well.

(Sorry - must clarify - editting this post like crazy!) I now use the SKI on the batter side and lay a piece of carpet inside the BD just laying there - about 18 inches wide - not touching the heads...and this setup works amazingly. No more blankets, sweatshirts, pillows, etc.

Hey John,

Thanks for all the compliments!

The bass drum mount is original... no extra holes and no signs whatsoever of removal or tampering. Also, the "battleship" lugs on the new Crest kit are a perfect match to the lugs on my Astro kit. I'm willing to bet that the dudes in the factory put the mount wherever they felt like on any given day.

Here's the snare drum:

Funny you mention the Astro kit... It is the only drum purchase I've ever made based solely on LOOKS and not on sound. Luckily, it sounds great and I use it on roughly half my gigs. Sounds and looks killer! Here's a pic of the full set:

Thanks for the tip regarding the bearing edges. The bearing edges on these Crest drums are very clean and require no recuts or mods of any kind. I'm gonna set them up with Aquarian Texture Coated single ply heads top and bottom, an Aquarian Full Force bass drum batter and an Aquarian Modern Vintage bass drum resonant head (perhaps with felt strip) and call it good.

Cheers,

Ryan

Yup - that's the snare I am talking about - though wish we could see the throw and butt - which may be an adjuster - both sides have adjustment knobs on mine - bet yours does as well.

I respectfully disagree with your theory on the mount. Perhaps you have a rare QA flaw that escaped out of the factory without being caught by someone's eye. Or it was changed out a long time ago and appears to be original. The angle of the mount sleeve (for lack of a better term) shows that it is designed to be offset. I'm not dissin' it or you or anything - just seems obvious to me, as I have seen these before and also others on these kits mounted in the middle. Most, if not all of the single mounts were offset, so long as the other side featured the cymbal arm mount. The doubles were in the middle. I just don't believe they made and sold kits with tom mount posts shooting out on an angle, when the mount sleeve is designed as it is (angle) so as to align straight up when mounted offset.

I was going to add a little 10 incher, but could not find a close enough match for the wrap. So, I decided to leave it. In that process I was shopping for battleship lugs and had a hard time finding them - found some on ebay with a buyer that wanted a fortune for them. I decided to abandon the project and they started popping up on the bay for much less. Ain't that the way it goes!?!

Any of your drums on these 2 kits have re-rings? None on mine.

John
