Sonor Kit?

It looks like the three drums have the same footprint left on them by the lugs, but those lugs wouldn`t have the same print,..it`s tough to tell from the far away pics. !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Oddball

I'm not a Sonor guy so I'm assuming the boat mounts are the big mounting brackets. They are shaped like a boat afterall. One has a bigger section than the other where the post goes so the smaller one is for the tom and the big one is for the bass drum? The last one only has the chromed boat shape section. I'm not sure what that one's for.

The guy told me he had been buying parts for the shells whenever they came up on ebay. I don't think any hardware came with the shells. He said he thinks he bought them in 2002 with the intention of building it up. He had them stored on a lot inside a panel Van all this time, hence the shrinkage and buckling. The Texas heat and humidity are brutal, so they are in pretty good shape considering. I did notice the lugs were different so which one goes with the shells. The previous owner did mention that some were for the bass drum. Last night I counted the holes and I have an 8 lug FT, a 6 lug Tom and I don't remember on the Bass, but I think it was 10 lugs. I'll take some closup shots, but I can see the tear drop and the boat shape impressed into the wrap.

Very nice looking! I have a 60's sonor, very similar looking that had 2 drums with bad wraps. They looked melted and bubbled near the seams causing splits. Jack Lawton saved them, though he probably hates me now, for sending him that mess! ( haha).

He used low heat to stretch the wrap and glued it back down.I think the lugs were left on as aids in holding during this. Close inspection shows the repair, but the wrap is unique. I vote save them!

That`s what I started thinking after my first thought of re-wrap cuz of the rareity of it being on a Teardrop. But it`s original and better get saved !!

I`m a Phonic and Champion guy just start`n to get into Teadrops, I wont do modern. I asked in another forum and will get the skinny on the lugs and mounts. He was prolly get`n what looks nice and collecting till he decided on quality of parts and sell off the rest. I`d do that, I don`t like blue drums but will make an exception for these every time !!

The guy I asked just sold of a lower end beginners kit in the same wrap from 1970 !! He`s got Teardrops/parts/stands gallore !!

FatherTime,

I think the lugs (and perhaps also the other hardware) with your shells is a mixed bag. I seem to spot at least two, perhaps even three varieties of lugs in your pictures.

In the 1950s, Sonor produced lugs that aren't really so-called teardrops proper, or perhaps could be considered pre-teardrops. They look like this:

I am not sure if there are any such lugs in your pics, but it would be easy for you to find out.

The proper teardrop lugs came in at least two versions, one early, slightly bulkier, the other later, more sleek. The later version is the most common one, the bulkier one probably featuring only on the first year or so of kits. These two versions can be seen in the pictures below.

The later (more common) teardrop lug in top row. (Note that these lugs are damaged.)

In the next picture, the later lug is to the left. Note its more slender neck.

Lastly, here you see the early version to the left. Its shorter, stubbier neck is easy to see.

Anyway, it shouldn't be difficult for you to identify what lugs you have using these pictures. If your shells are indeed from a teardrop kit it is not likely that a mix of various lugs would have been used.

There are a couple more pre-Teardrop lugs but your centered mount (with the screws on the face) put`s them 69/70 and pre-Drops wont do !

So most of the lugs I have are pre teardrops that don't go with my shells? The rest are the correct ones. I count 21 of those lugs and some of them are broken so I probably have less than that. Bummer. I have to take a closer look at those to see if they are the later more slender lug or the earlier version. So which teardrop lugs do I need? Are the tom and bass drum lugs the same lugs? Thanks fellas for the insights. I never would have known what I really need to build this kit back up. I guess first things first. save the wrap.
