Sonor Kit?

Loading...

This is my 1st post so I'll tell you I'm a huge Sonor geek! I've had a bunch of teardrop sets and more than a few were projects. I never paid close attention to the lugs to notice the disparities Magnus pointed out. That guy knows his Sonor drums! But in my scavenging for parts I never ended up with lugs that didn't fit. So, while they may not be identical in subtle ways, they are functionally interchangeable.

To specifically answer your latest question, the bass and Tom lugs are the same.

Btw, Make sure you have the bolt inserts for the lugs before you install them or you will be very frustrated when it comes time to put the heads on as your tension rods will have nothing to thread into. That was the source of major frustration the 1st teardrop project I undertook.

Yep. I will do my darnest to save the wrap. Here is the hardware that came with the shells. I think I need to buy quite a few pieces if I can find them.

There were cheap Japanese drums in the early to mid. 70's with Sonor tardrop type lugs. They used Philips head screws instead of studs and nuts. There was only a very short neck on the lugs and they were a slightly different shape. The screw spacing was different than the stud spacing on the authentic Sonor lugs.

With regards to the person that Oddball is recommending for parts. He may have them but get photographs of everything you are intending to buy and confirmation that that is exactly what he is sending you. I've bought from him and he is a real wheeler-dealer; he expects you to make correct assumptions about what he is selling and when he shorts you he won't send anything else unless you pay extra shipping. He also doesn't notice cracks in lugs , so get him to confirm that he has checked every one over with a lens and that they are crack free .

So most of the lugs I have are pre teardrops that don't go with my shells? The rest are the correct ones. I count 21 of those lugs and some of them are broken so I probably have less than that. Bummer. I have to take a closer look at those to see if they are the later more slender lug or the earlier version. So which teardrop lugs do I need? Are the tom and bass drum lugs the same lugs? Thanks fellas for the insights. I never would have known what I really need to build this kit back up. I guess first things first. save the wrap.

FatherTime,Thanks to Magnus the lugs that would go to your shells in the lug on the right in the last photo..If you dont have the hex nut insert for the lugs you can always go to the hardwear store look at the hex nuts the thread size you need to fit the T-rods are 1/4 20 threads.Thats for all T-rods bass drum and toms ete..Mikey

Geez I take terrible pics. You can see right off the lug on the left is not correct per Magnus' info, (Big props to Magnus, he knows his stuff).

Calfskin, are these the lugs you are talking about from the 70's? The spacing doesn't work. The lug on the right is what I need. I have 21 lugs, but I have a couple with the broken post. Also notice the imprint on the wrap. It has the correct shape.

Thanks to all of you for the info. It certainly makes it easier for me to get this kit put back together with the correct hardware. Love this Forum!

yes the one on the left is probably a knockoff. I don't think Sonor ever used Philips head mounting screws. The spacing is wider. The key evidence is the receiver nut. Sonor used quite large tension rods with 9mm slot heads and very oddly, the most ubiquitous thread on earth and non metric 1/4 - 20 on the shaft. The nut inside the Sonor lug is a really common 1/4 -20 hex nut, available for pennies at any hardware store.

the nut in the knockoff lug is an American style receiver nut with a square base, long collar and a very standard 12 -24 machine thread( basically 7/32 x 24), designed to accept any normal square head tension rod(the head of which by the way, are neither metric or imperial. they are the remarkable meterial size)-----somewhere between 5mm and 1/4". Hope this all helps.

Blair, I have another project to finish this weekend and then I'm starting on this kit.

I also want to correct the lug numbers The Bass drum has 8 lugs, not 10 as I mentioned previously.

In the photo of the two lugs that you posted. The lug on the right is the Sonor lug and goes to the shells. The lug on the left that is a copy of a 60's Sonor lug used on Star drums that were made by Tama in the late 60's to about 1975..I do have a lot of these Sonor lugs in stock have over 100 of them.....Mikey
