Sonor Kit?

From OddBall

Now the lash`n,......Why you gonna re-wrap, that so far as I can see can be saved ?? Only someone lazy and tired, with no will, would give up all hope and sh*tcan another Teardrop !! The only thing that can save you is, I`ve never seen that wrap on a Teardrop !!

LOL. I would rather not rewrap. The wrap has shrunk away from the original holes and buckled in places. I'm not sure how to flatten it out and stretch it. Do you have any suggestions. I could use some advice. . . .James

That wrap showed up on German drums in the late 60's. I'm not sure when Sonor started using it but Tromsa made quite a few drums from 1968 on for a while. It isn't Nitro Cellulose----I think it is Acetate and it is very brittle and prone to cracking, especially around the lugs, when they loosen a bit and start creeping. Sometimes the buckling can be flattened out by using gentle progressive clamping over time and then ,making sure the lugs stay tight.

I've had some success bringing separated cracks back together but they are tricky. You need a combination of friction ,pressure and heat.

This is a very beautifull wrap in the not so common Indigo blue, with varied intensities of blues weaving in and out----kind of like , the wake of a boat ,cutting through deep blue water at sundown. . I would preserve it but there is a dark blue onyx out there and although not the same , it would do the drums justice but cost a lot.

This one was Blau Schiefer (blue schale) for Tromsa. Tacton also used it .

thanks guys. As I mentioned before I would rather not rewrap.

Calfskin, I appreciate the advice. I will try your method.

Blair, I'll keep that in mind when i start looking for parts.

I think this is going to take awhile to get it completed. I may need to sell some stuff so I can pay for the parts. . . . James

I had stretched a piece of lanolium before, but it was not adheared. If you can get it off in one piece you may be able to roll it with a heavy roller but any heat should be warm, hot will make it brittle. If you can do it while it`s still on, even better, do like calf said, slowly with clamping and itty bitty bits at a time progressively !!

You may have the only Teardrop in that wrap !! It`s beautiful and well worth any effort to save !! Not to mention you prolly have the only one in that wrap !! I can`t believe you have a Teardrop in that wrap !!

It appears that in the English catalogues, Sonor called this wrap Blue Ripple. They also catalogued a Red Ripple. It has , for a long time facinated me , that the drum mfg. would offer one or two colours of a certain wrap and pass, on others, for of course, there were only a few wrap factories, which offered a set number of options but often many colour choices(the dye is the easiest thing to alter). Special proprietary wraps were made but at great cost( Trixon Croco wraps are a good example----only used otherwise by Tromsa and I think after Trixon stopped production---perhaps from Trixon overstock?)

The interesting thing about this Blue Ripple wrap is that it also existed and was catalogued by Tromsa about the same time(1969) in Brown,Red,Violet,Gold and Grey, albeit by a different name i.e. Violett Schiefer(violett schale). Now that I think of it , the Gold version was also used by Rimmel in the 70's and therefore, likely at least one other colour variant as well.

Yep. I will do my darnest to save the wrap. Here is the hardware that came with the shells. I think I need to buy quite a few pieces if I can find them.

That`s not good !!

I`ll start with the boat mounts are identical, from the same bin identical as the Champion and Phonics from the Seventies !! Should be easy find for the missing mount pieces.

You have three different lugs with three different drums and all have the same wrap,....to be continued !!
