My First Restoration: Mid-Late 70’s Slingerland WMP

16" Tom - AFTER!!!

Again, I am pretty pleased with the work. More pitting on the rims than the 13" but from afar you can't even tell! Besides, it is a Vintage kit!!!

Enjoy!

You're doing all the right things and a great job with this set. Having ADD myself, I know how hard it can be to either stay on task or not go all "hyper-focused" and lock myself in the basement until everything is complete.

I also try to do things in stages over different days.

1.) Take a ton of pictures

2.) Tear the drum down/label and bag up parts - walk away

3.) Take more pictures

4.) Clean/polish the shells - walk away

5.) Clean lugs/tension rods - walk away

6.) Clean hoops - walk away

7.) If it's a snare, clean/polish strainer assembly/hardware - walk away

8.) Re-assemble the drum hardware

9.) Install and tune with new heads

10.) Take more pictures

Oh and the most important step, enjoy playing the finished drums.

I can't wait to see all of the drums finished and in the same picture.

Thanks for sharing,

Tim

Looks like it really just needs a good cleaning!

For the toms yes a good cleaning. For the bass not quite. Wait until you see the pictures. Theres a small crack In the finish but awful bearing edges. The outer ply also had some cracks that needed gluing and sanding. Someone kept the front head off this thing for years. The hoops need work too. I may make a separate post for pics on that because I really want to do it right (can't decide if I want to strip or sand or both!!). This drum was also missing some parts that I mentioned earlier.

I'll post pics later but they probably will need to be cut down the road. We'll see if i can't do any better with a 3rd round of sanding tonight!!

Here is the 22" bass "before" pictures.

This drum was pretty beat up. Like I said earlier, it seems like the front head was left off for years. Had to glue a bunch of surface level cracks in the outer ply along with the crack in the finish and a few separation spots. Sanded the edges like mad yesterday and got them to an acceptable level for now but I'll probably will have the bearing edges re-cut in the future if I am not satisfied with the tuning.

I'll post pictures of the progress later but here are the before shots for now.

Some "during" pictures. Forgot that I had to get a glue syringe (which after looking everywhere I finally found 1 way overpriced in a hobby/craft store) to glue where there was some ply separation. Glued, and clamped.

Also a before picture of the crack in the finish. I'll show the after picture when done.
