My First Restoration: Mid-Late 70’s Slingerland WMP

From kevins

That would be a Set-O-Matic tom mount.....

LOL! I must have been thinking of my old Tama Rockstar... or maybe it was the Pearl. Are you a fact checker full time?? Burger Kin

I made the correction, don't know why I put that as an optimount. Probably the combination of a lack of sleep/polish fumes!!!Eye Ball

Thanks again!

UPDATE:

Bass drum has been glued, sanded and polished. Hardware has been remounted. My unfortunate discovery is that the threading on the wing screw hole on the left spur is stripped and needs to be re-tapped. After trying to do it myself last night I called around to machinists and they led me to a guy who is going to put a new insert (helicoil?) in there and fix it up real nice like!

Also, there is a picture of one of the inside of the lug casings, I guess I am trying to get it done and have taken less pictures on this part than before. I'll post what I have.

Oh yeah, got a white ambassador bass head and bought a Slingy decal from ebay user Bodo10 and applied it to the head after removing the Remo logo with nail polish remover (I was nervous because there was a black cloud at first but after going through a few cotton balls I got it completely off). I did it myself and it looks FANTASTIC! I have never been able to put a sticker on without bubbles ever, this one was really easy!!

Again, I'll post final pictures soon. I hope to have this thing done tonight!!! If not probably Monday night (gotta watch my Giants in the Super Bowl!!)

Oh yeah, I just wanted to comment that on ALL of the drums that I opened up EVERY piece of felt was in great condition after all these years. I didn't have to replace any of it. Weird!

FINALLY DONE!!! I will post the remaing parts of the project in seperate posts starting with the story of the stripped bass spur.

So the screw hole for the bass spur was stripped. The wing nut now too small for the thread holes. I not being that handy serached around and learned about tap and die sets. I bought a small one, bought some of that putty type weld (JB makes it) that is supposed to create surface, filled in the hole, let it cure over night, drilled it and tapped it with new thread. After doing that I was slightly excited but skeptical. When I put the leg into the mount and tightened it with necessary pressure it of course buckled and did not hold.

So I searched online and ended up on some auto websites that suggested finding a machinist. I found a few that were all corporate, one finally led me to someone who could possibly help. Spoke to him on the phone and he said yeah, I can retap it with a helicoil tap insert, that putty s*&t won't hold! So I take it to him, have him retap both since the other was a little worn and I figured I better get them to match. He charged me $30, I only had $22 cash so he took 20. And viola, good as new!

Pictures 1 & 2 below show before, 3 & 4 show the after.

BASS HOOPS:

I applied 3 coats of Valspar High Gloss Black spray paint on the bass hoops. I sanded with 220 before hand and taped the chrome inlay. I used the same mothers car wax like I did on the shells. Let it dry and buffed.

The inlays aren't perfect (some pitting and scratching) but they look a ton better than before! Some imperfections in the hoop but for someone who absolutely sucks at painting (yes even spray), I am shocked that it looks this good after doing it outside with a dim house light.

Pictures 1 & 2 = Before

Pictures 3 - 5 = After

Enjoy!

BASS DRUM:

Here it is all put together in its glory!

This drum was truly the one that required the most work, I was worried that all that sanding and gluing would not turn out well but I am VERY happy with the results!!

Front Head- Remo Ambassador w/felt strip (see a few posts ago on how I did that)

Batter Head - Remo Powersonic Coated (I am loving this head on here, no internal muffling or pillows to shift in the drum since it is all on the inside and outside of the head itself).

Page 2 of Bass Drum Pictures:

This shows the crack in the wrap up close (doesn't look that great but it is holding, remember I did nothing to color it). Then there is a mid shot and a full shot. Half of the crack is covered by the collar of the head so it is barely noticeable!

Finally, THE COMPLETED KIT! (minus the 12" tom that I will probably restore this summer when I can do it in my garage, gotta redo the basement now!)

Yes, it is also minus the snare. However, I have to thank fungusamungus for selling me his 78-79 SK COB snare! It arrived yesterday and is in beautiful shape! I will post some final pictures of the kit setup with the snare and cymbals but for now, enjoy the toms and bass!

For all of you following thank you for your help, advice, and motivation especially! As I have said before, I am not very handy and am one that gets particularly impatient with tasks like this. But I hung in there and learned so much from reading so many posts on this site from many of its users.

Thanks again as I start to wrap up this restoration post. Now for the final pictures that you have all been waiting for!
