Just need to spend more time tuning the 13" tom. Not where I want it yet. The 16" is good and I usually go with a perfect 4th from those 2 sizes but I am using the original heads on the bottom which are worn so it is is making a little more difficult to find that "sweet spot."

But yeah, they sound great! I am surprised that it didn't take long to tune the bass where I wanted it with all the edge problems that I had to sand out. Maybe once I get the whole kit nice and tuned after I get new heads on the snare I'll post a video. We'll see!

Excellent job with the resto and documentation! Most important, what does your family think. Aside from having an awesome kit, this was an important lesson for your kids. In today's "throw away" society, these drums would have been written off and thrown away by most people. A little work and time really pays off. You now have a quality instrument to be proud of that will last another 30 years.

Mike, go have fun with them...and thanks for teaching the next generation to appreciate the classics! My 3-year-old daughter thought it was the greatest thing to help Daddy fix his drums. I think I'll have to find another kit in need of some TLC and a good home when she gets older so she can really help work on them and do more than pass rags and parts.

My kids are pretty blown away! They didn't help out as much as I planned (had to do most of my work when they were in bed until the wee hours) but they did help a little bit. Even had my 2 year old putting washers on the t-rods while my 6 year old finger tightened tthem! My 14 year old helped with cleaning and the 12 y/o helped make sure the logo head was centered so hey, that counts right?? LOL! :p

My wife is more excited that I am done. I started crashing on the couch on the later nights because I would wake her up when I came in. But she is shocked by how nice they came out!

I have a rehearsal tonight so I will start marking up those heads in a few hours! Even if I am using brushes for a majority of it!

Update:

Played the drums FINALLY Weds night for that rehearsal. I thought I was going to need to fine tune the 13 but when I set it up and hit it I was blown away with the sound!! Deep, warm and woody! That sucker sounded nice!! Maybe it was because I was initially tuning them in front of my fireplace in a small room I was getting that echo! Now I want to adjust the bottom head on the 16 a little to match.

That bass still sounds great!! Very pleased.

Have a gig tonight. I'll try to take some pictures of the full set-up under the lights!

I have a Buddy Rich Slingy of similar vintage. Only real differences are 4 legs and an extra cymbal mount on the bass.

I gave it the once-over a couple years ago, and it's been in cases since I last moved, but those pics are strongly motivating me to take it out again and give it the business.

This thread inspired my first post here. Great job! I'm about to start a similar Slingerland clean-up and restoration project with my son. We recently got a 64 WMP kit (22, 13, 16) that needs some TLC. Really appreciate you taking the time to document your progress.
