I got a Grover SV 4.75 x 13 snare drum off eBay for 68.00 bucks. It was dusty and needed a new batter head. Chewie:That snare is awesome and it is my backup/rehearsal drum. New they go for 350/400. It's good enough to be a main snare on most guys kits. There are deals out there in this economy. I got my Recording Custom kit off Craigslist for 400 bucks. I have recorded with them and played hundreds of shows on them. If you like the Griffin snare by all means get it but just look around first. Also, if you buy an old Ludwig Blue and Olive badge Supraphonic, it won't cost you much more than 150.00 and it will last forever and sounds awesome. 44.00 bucks is 44.00 bucks. You'll just end up selling it at a loss later because no one has heard of Griffin drums or to a kid in the neighborhood. I don't know. Maybe I am 100% wrong. Good luck.

This is a research project, not a side drum. The guys are tongue-in-cheek helping Mark out with this for fun and laughs, not because he really needs a snare. This is for the good of all mankind...or dhummerkind...a one off laugh for all of us!guitar2

Well, I do expect drum for fun (Mark?) to wear a white lab coat while doing this research... Or, if a lab coat is not available, white socks...

Wow, this is incredible! OK, I'll be sending a PM to the three of you! As Jonni said, this is not because I need another snare drum, but for pure research. You guys are the greatest!

I couldn't agree more! Believe me, I don't need another snare drum. This is really just to see what $45 buys these days.

I think I do have a white lab coat! If not, I'll be wearing the white socks!

PM's have been sent and I'm purchasing the drum right now!

Mark knows what he's doin', what he is getting into. This is a research effort, not a back up plan for failure. He is well versed and knows exactly what he is doing, and that is why several of our buddies are donating to the cause (tongue in cheek)...because it is fun, and for 11 bucks, it could well do humanity a service. Or not...who knows, that is why it is on the table. I hope it falls apart so we all get a good laugh out of it. Or, it could be a tank and we all buy one just for kicks! At any rate, it would have to sound better than an MIJ 6 lugger from the 60s that neither I nor Mark has had the opportunity to work on and tune. We do that, makes a bad drum good. And, if we can get them cheap enough, give them to a kid in our neighborhood to become the next Neil Peart....or Nick Mason, or Mickey Hart or Stewart Copeland or dare I say Buddy Rich, Baby Dodds, Louis Belson or Gene Krupa....know what I mean, Vern...?

Thanks so much for your high praise of me!! Excited I will be posting pictures and a complete tear down and review of this drum. Will it completely fall apart after the first rim shot or paradiddle? That's what this will all prove. I had a friend who, some time ago, purchased an inexpensive HB snare drum on eBay, advertised as an all-birch shell. Like myself, he wanted to see what this drum was all about. Turns out that "all-birch" shell was more like "all-cardboard" and fell apart quickly! He was able to recoup his investment by selling the parts separately. My first impressions from the pictures are that this is a better drum than that HB. My dissection and analysis of the Griffin drum will prove what it is... and isn't. Stay tuned! -Mark
