Thoughts on this drum on eBay

While NOT a vintage drum, this certainly qualifies as a Non-USA drum. I just stumbled onto it and am amazed at the low price and free shipping. The shell appears to be of reasonable quality. I couldn't even gather all the hardware for this price! Just wanted other forum members to offer up their thoughts on this drum. Thanks!

Crazy is what it is. I just brought a brand new digital satellite receiver for $35 also made in China. What worries me is I don't think we will know the true cost (especially to the environment) of all these cheap Chinese goods until much later...

For a student drummer it would probably be a great deal. For the long term and a demanding drummer who would be tuning it high- putting a lot of tension on the tension bolts, changing heads frequently and using the on/off feature of the strainer a lot- the metal parts are probably not going to hold up to all that.

Also, the hoops would be as thin as possible- so they will have a little flex - which is not a great thing. You can always go over the bearing edges with sand paper to smooth them out and give yourself a little snare bed on the reso side- thats easy to do.

With a little love it might be the deal of the month- good luck with it

Definitely looks cheap...not sure if I'd say it's a deal, though. On Craigslist I see metal Pearl snares go for $50 or less, and 80's Ludwig Acrolites and full MIJ kits go for $100 -- but if you absolutely need a new snare at $45, I guess there it is!

My vote is that it is a snare that was made as cheaply as possible with zero regard for anything resembling quality or workmanship. The clincher is that he has at least 10 of those available and he isn't just trying to flip an oddball on the double quick.

Of course, for the money, if it tickles your fancy go for it! Free shipping to boot! The worst thing that could happen is it is junk and explodes after your first paradiddle and you are out half a tank of gas.......Falling Do

Hey everyone! Thanks for the comments so far! I'm tempted to get one just to check it out, take it apart and report to everyone on the quality... or lack of! Do the lugs appear to be stamped, or is it just my eyes? As for the hoops being thin, I can't believe they'd be any thinner than 1.6mm, which was the thickness of most Ludwig drums in the 60's and 70's. The bearing edges and beds may need cleaning up. Again, at only $44.95 delivered, I'd be willing to take a chance just to satisfy my curiously. Believe me, I wasted more money than this on other drum related items that should have never seen the light of day! Anyway, keep those thoughts and comments coming!

I've got a backup snare like this from Pure Percussion. Its maple and it sounds fine.

The one above i think would be just fine as a back up snare.

i have 2 lugs that look kinda like what's on that drum.

i can't take pics now, but the lugs don't look to be cast lugs. they look to be like the 2 i have, which are crimped and folded lugs. weird i know and i could be wrong. i will post a pic when i can so you can see what i mean.

plus i never heard of the drum company.

products such as this are being pumped out of China by the boatload every hour. probably decent enough to get into the marketplace but China isn't exactly the coolest country in terms of their civil rights, environmental concerns, economic policies and on and on and on and on. a similar scenario played out in the 50's, 60's and 70's with Japan and all of the same concerns were there too ----look what happened to local economies and venerable locally important companies, that actually produced quality products as a result of bowing down to the cheap is good ethic. we don't ever learn do we? buy a used drum for the same price and impress your friends with your common sense not your glitz. it's a drum ,not a head of brocolli---doesn't have to be fresh.
