Converting Ludwig Standard to Luddy Classic

Ok as soon as I get another grommet Ill video the impact process. It worked absolutly perfect on 80% of these drums, but If I knew then what I know now........... And yes the Hibond tape does work well when sticking wrap to wrap and makes hoop inlay installaiion effortless!

From wadsmoe

After experimenting with the JSam method & the Precision method I ended up using a combination of the 2 processes much like yourself. That includes using hi-bond tape for the seams, but gluing all the way and not "floating" wrap on the shell. If you have time, I would be quite interested in a how-to video on re-installing badges with impact gun. I'm sure we could all benefit from that. I've been using a wrench on the inside and allen wrench on the outside with near perfect results. Trick is to use scotch tape so badge does not "spin" or rotate clockwise while tightening. The other trick is to tighten down 3/4, then remove grommet tool, put a flat washer over the beveled bolt; then reinstall grommet tool and tighten it up, thus sucking down and flattening the grommet to flush on the interior of the shell.:)

When I got these 69 standard's they came with a 20" slingy(supposedly) bass drum. It has the rail on top of it for the counselette. I have this statue A friend of mine made and iits too low to the ground, so Im thinking Im gonna wrap this drum in something stunning and make a pedestal out of it. Its gonna be fabulous Y'all!!!!! IF this aint a slingy please let me know

That is an MIJ shell....use it at will!

Are you going to add the bottom head on the floor tom?

I discovered that today. The floor tom leg brackets say JAPAN on them and the screws inside gave it away, plus the tehsion rods are a larger thread than the standard , but I do have some t rods that fit.

I never did mention today, that I finally got to play my new Citrus Mod Ludwig Super Classic Drums today. They sound fabulous, after I stuffed a pilow in the bass drum hole!!!!. This kit actually came with a evens muffling pillow, with I couldnt find, but I had a regular ole pillow and it sounds fabulous Y'all!!!!!!!!!!!!I am very happy with the way everything turned out. There were a few snags I ran into that I really didnt document. When something goes terribly wrong I forget all about pics, I sometime panic for a sec till i stop and figure out a way to correct it. Like I had my floor tom sittin right next to a electric heater in the garage. I wasnt thinkin. ll the sudden I noticed it and the wrap was bubbling up on the side of the drum that was next to the heater, needles to say I paniced! Fortunatly I rubbed the bubbles back out with my thumb, unfortunatly I got a hugh blister on my thumb from that, but the wrap looks fine now!! Whew!!!!

Ok Y'all,

My summerization of converting luddy Standards to Luddy Classics is this: The luddy standards have the same coveted 3 ply shells as the luddy Classics. The most noticable difference is the lugs. The Standards have standard aka rocker lugs on all the drums, the classics have large classic lugs on the 13" tom, 16" floor tom' and 22" bass drum, and small classic lugs on the 12" tom and bowtie lugs on the matching snare. The lug foot print of the large classic lugs and bowtie snare lugs are identical to the standard lugs footprints. The tom holder on the bass drum is different and the badge location on the bass drum is different. The standards have disappearing spurs, and the classic have the curved square spurs. The interiors of the standard is the granitone acoustical coating vs the clear maple interior of the classics. I understand they used the granitone interiors on the classic in later years though. The plasit-Kote stone paint is almost identical to the graintone coating. This coating covers a multitude of repairs, therefore allowing you drill new holes for the small classic lugs, the grommet hole, and classic curved spurs, and fill the old holes and not be able to see the repair, on a full rewrap. The standard wood snare will be almost identical to the coveted Jazz Festival Snare, with the exception of being rewrapped. I think I just about covered it. Did I leave anything out y'all?
