After 6 months of re-gluing the maple re-rings onto the the three ply mahogany-maple-mahogany Slingy shell, removing rust from washers, screws and springs, shining chrome, re-assembly... this Leedy Chicago 48 badge, Broadway concert snare is ready to show (and play) :) The badge dates this drum early-mid '60's. The chrome Leedy beavertail lugs are exceptionally nice. The shell was the big problem...
The maple re-rings were just about completely off and took lots of clamping and glue to re-attach them properly and maintain the original round over bearing edges.
The "Zoomatic" strainer knob had come off as well. The knob is a "push on" style. With a small piece of plumbers teflon tape on the end of the shaft and pushed into the female end of the knob, the fix was made.
The Blue Onyx wrap is really nice! The stock "Zoomatic" strainer on a Leedy drum is testimony to the demise of Leedy following Slinglerland's purchase of the Leedy factory in Chicago and its ultimate closure. So, this drum having Slinglerland strainer, shell and hoops with gorgeous Leedy small beavertail lugs, represents the end of an era.
Drum has great deep vintage tone from a nice three ply mahogany shell!
I picked it up locally for $50 last summer but have at least 10-12 hours of work into it. Fun work and a labour of love!
Enjoy!
