Slingerland Gold Veil Find?

Loading...

Hi Guys

I picked these up this morning. From this site I think these are Gold veil? Nice sizes 20, 12, 12 and 14 x 14 floor. The bad: The insides of the bass and both 12s were painted yellow. 14 FT has no bottom hoop. There is one bass drum hoop with the inlay which is in about 3 different pieces. Im not sure if im gonna restore these. Is the paint removal a job for pros only? They are date stamped 1964. Any thoughts? and Im looking or an 8 lug cob 14 inch hoop. Thanks

Pete

This is a rare set! That finish is hard to find and it is Gold Veiled Ebony Pearl.

I would take a step back and see what is original and not. The floor tom leg mounts are not..

I would consider having a professional taking care of the insides of the drums and bringing them back to original.

Better Photos of each drum and lets see if there are any other mods or changes to the drums besides the obvious double rails on the bass drum.

Ill get some more pics up soon. There is an extra hole at each of the floor tom mounts and all the drums have some bubbling on the wrap. Also, there is some cracking on one section of the wrap on the floor tom. Thanks!

Of Slingerland's 3 veils, all of which are very rare, the gold veiled ebony (yours) are the rarest. In over 15 years of collecting, that's only the 3rd complete set I've seen or heard of.

Seems that the ft leg mounts have been replaces as well.

If it were me, I wouldn't go too nuts about the interior paint.

That wrap is very thin and tends to bubble and crack.

I'd do it...but if and when you remove the hardware to clean them, try to do it quickly as that wrap will move, and getting the lugs back into the shell may be a problem.

A pro can probably do a good job on the holes, as black may be easy to hide.

What I might do in your situation is remove (carefully) all the hardware to clean and send the shells to Jack Lawton for crack and hole repair.

Great find, even better in those small sizes. I'd go back to one rail and one tom...

HI All

I bought these Slingys from my good friend Pete. Any Help on the restoration process its greatly appreciated. I can pretty much restore everything by myself but the bubbling on the wrapp its a riddle for me...any thoughts? Also Webmaster are you sure the double rail mount its not original? both toms are supposed to be mounted on one only???? (if theres flaws on my english please you guys excuse me Im still learning)

I'm not seeing too well and my cat is of no help. But, can you confirm that the insides are in fact painted with yellow paint and it's not the typical yellowish brownish creamy yucky insides?

The fact that the original post claims a date stamp would lead me to believe they have not been painted.

Yet another reason why I'm trying to dig along this pathway of thought.

Here you go. As you guys can see, the floor tom is not painted inside. I'd like to know if the yellow paint is original. Also the wrap is fairly thin and has wrinkles close to the lugs and it's ripped on the floor tom. Any suggestions on these is appreciated. Also I'd like to know if the 2 rail tom holders are factory. In case one is not the second 12 tom its a later adition? Theres no badges on the any of the toms. Thanks in advance for any input!!!
