That looks like the early birth pangs of the Recording Custom line. You can see the early design cues in the lugs, the shells, and the tom mount. Notice the cool stacked relief on the lug. It goes from one level to another. Connect those lugs and you have the long hi-tension lug of the RC line. Also, the shells are hinting at the 6 ply birch toms to come. That hex mount arm looks to be an early version of the hex arm that is to be. Pretty cool snapshot of Yamaha design. Very nice.

Is it possible for someone to help me determine if the rail mount came before or after Mraks pics?..Our kits are so similar but there are a couple of little things that are different...Also,were some of the old shells maple and not birch?.....thyx

Does your rack tom have mufflers? And is it possible to get a close up of the lugs?

If you mean my kit,yes it has a muffler for the batter head,a long rectangular shape, and the lugs are the same as the pics.

Thanks, I guess mine isn't a Yamaha....

With all the experts out there,it seems Yamaha,or early Yamaha,is a hard to find topic.I guess if it were an American scenario it would be differentHelp2

Defiantly a Yamaha Kit... I have one of these in my Garage, been wanting to restore it for years.. Eventually i'll get around to it.. Mine has a Gretsch/Ludwig "copy" Rail mount with the flat plate design.. Guess your mount is either after market, or an original first of the Hex mounts, that come out after mine was made.. The ball mount and the Hexagonal Rod look similar to what they put on the the Yamaha 8000 kits, i have one of these as well, fantastic little kit.

Hope this helps.. Cheers WannaB..

Another Vintage Yamaha set here, lucky to find this one last week, untouched, original evrything down to skins, pedals, sticks and even drum key and spanner for the rail adjustment, just like a 60's time capsule !

I have started the cleanup, although this is simply a matter of dissassembly polish lube and re-assemble.

Same grey inside shells, but have a wooden snare.

I usually play RC's, and I was suprised how good these sound, snare in particular. I am gonna re head with ambassadors, keep the originals of course for posterity.

Check out some of it`s brothers (click to enlarge)
