That shell is amazing. How did you attach the lugs to the shell? Wood dowels? Walnut should work for the hoops. I think maple is fine as well. All maple all the time. Can't wait to see the finished product.

That is one amazing looking drum. Now, please don't take this wrong, as calf is VERY expensive for top shelf, and if you are going to practice first, buy from Matt. Not the prettiest, but for $15.00 shipped, if that, you can get a good, clean skin and do your learning on them, then contact Rebeats for the top shelf stuff, if you don't like the look of the finished product. But at least with his skin you won't be in danger of ruining a $70.00++ piece of skin.

Before you order raw hide, make sure it is going to be big enough to mount. In the sticky "tucking calfskin", there is a ton of info. If you order a 14" diameter piece, will it be big enough for a 14" drum? You may need to order a 16" in order to get enough tucking room.
