I do very often. DW or Pearl snare stands.

Sometimes on my ludwig downbeats I use the console mount which is brilliant.

Every drumset I own (all customized by myself) have "virginized" bass drums. So I allways use a snare stand. I guess that with regard to sound RIMMS and a stand would also be an option, but I don't like the look of that.

My trick is attaching black rubber hose (petrol-hose for cars) to the stand, to have the tom "floating". I tested with comparing the sound of the tom standing that way, and the sound of the tom hanging from just my thumb and indexfinger: no difference, no loss of tone or resonance in any way.

My 13" sounds better and rings longer on my stand than when I hold it in the air. I guess I've got a 3 part solution, ranked in my order of importance/results:

1. I cut 3 small lengths of pinchweld rubber seal and slide it onto the bottom hoop at equal spacing. I've got single flange hoops so I use end rubber seal but if you've got triple flang hoops then side rubber should work. It's effectively a little rubber ISO mount that will sit tight and not fall off yet won't damage the hoop at all as the 'grip' section is just rubber.

2. I attach some foam on top of the rubber 'claw' on the basket. Make sure it covers the bottom and wraps up the sides. Nothing fancy, I cut up a dishwashing foam and superglued it on. As the foam is pretty soft and has a lot of give it sucks up any space from the basket being left loose. I reckon I've got half an inch between the inside vertical face of the basket claw and the side of the hoop. No chance of the basket choking the drum by squeezing it...

3. Use an old stand, I've got a cheap 60s Pearl single braced number. They're not built like a tank so they don't suck all the tone out of the drum but they're still stable.

Any of those three ideas on their own will drastically improve the sound but combing them is the real winner. I'm going to rip the foam off and replace it with something black so it's not as visible.

I don't like to put stress on the BD with a rack tom when the drums are 3 plies, they crack easily with time, so i always use a snare stand in those applications....

It is funny to see this thread. Dale griffins-Mott& Britsh Lions used a snare stand to mount a smaller tom next to the tom mounted to the bass drum.I guess for him it was a good fit.Now this was in the late 70's and the first I had ever seen
