Hey all,
I recently set up my Jason Bonham Ludwig vistalite signature set with the rack tom on a snare stand...I absolutely love the sound of it!! This is the first time that I`ve ever used a snare stand...
I`m curious as to how many members here use stands for their toms...Please post your opinions...

I have before,depends on the set I'm using. I've mainly done it with my Vistalite kit for the 14" tom. I've never minded it. I know some people say it chokes the sound, but my thought has always been - if it works for my snare, it certainly works for my tom. In my " Wee Bit Of Madness " thread I have a photo of my Ludwig / Slingerland kit ( also a video ) and all four toms are on snare stands.
I use a Snare stand on my 14" Rack tom and it's great. It's sounds incredible. I have a little trick though. I cut some square pieces of a mouse pad and taped them to the cradle where the tom sits. I find the tom sounds and resonates better than it does when it's sitting on the hard rubber.
I haven't mounted a tom on a bass drum since 1969. Snare stands always. Opinions will vary, but I believe that mounting a tom on a bass drum is a bad idea for many reasons. Also, as you have discovered, rack-toms sound great in a good quality snare stand.

Rod I mount my 12x15" stainless steel off of a snare stand, but mount every other tom on my bass drums. I also do it with some of my wood kits, I just like how versatile a snare stand is for toms.
Drumguy1988 - Some of the newer stands have more flexible and cushioned rubber. I got one with a kit I bought recently. I actually use that snare stand mainly as a tom stand. It's a Pearl S-930. Instead of having the normal ratchet tilter it has a omni ball style tilter. Much easier to get precise angles, and as opposed to up and down you have left to right as well. But I like your mouse pad idea for the harder rubber stands, might be something to use with my snares as well.
My 14x10" sits on a low profile snare stand.. It is now in use as a floor tom.. When I first tried this only a couple of years back, I was amazed how much better it sounded (to me)... It allows me a much more comfortable height & closeness to the ride cymbal...
I will never go back to the "2 up" setup...

I had one of those Pearl S-930 Snare Stands but I didn't like it for my rack tom. I couldn't get it in close enough and over top of my Bass drum. I use the model I think from 1990's. One of Pearl Best Snare stands.
Here it is with my kits. The last picture shows how close and over top of the bass drum I can get my 14" Rack. Now It helps that I'm using a 22" Kick.

Perfect stand for that application with the "Offset" cradle...
