Hello everyone, I have been searchinng for the introduction forum myself. Im glad I found this thread. Now I know Im not an idiot. lolIm Poppy. I have a 68 ludwig kid, I believe is sky blue pearl, but it dont look blue at all. it looks more like it should be called silver grey pearl. I came here to see if y'all can help me figure this out. I need a snare to match this kit. I also have a 60's blue slate pearl Sonor kit. i am looking for a floor tom for this kit. I found one on craigs list in canada. I am trying to get that guy to list it on ebay so I can buy it. I allso have a tama rockstar kit with a pearl rack that i actually use. I hope to meet some new friends in here. Thanks for having me!Poppy

Hi Poppy, Eddie Mack here. I'm brand new (today-right now!) and I was wonderin' how to introduce myself too. I quess this is as good a way as any.

I've got a set of '64 Ludwigs (22/16/13) that are SkyBP. Unfortunately, years ago, when I was younger & stupider, I lost the snare (5x14, 8 lug) in a pawn shop, so I'm looking for one too. I saw one just yesterday on eBay that I'm gonna' pass on 'cause it's a 6 lugger and I'm waiting on an 8. So you could check that out.

If you pull a lug or tom mount off any of the drums you should be able to see the original blue color. I personally think it's very pretty. Mine also look more silver-grey, although the 16' floor tom has developed a slight, but distinct greenish cast. This 'darkening' is pretty normal for older pearl finishes as far as I can tell. I have a set of '63 SBP Slingerlands (20/14/12) that have done the same thing, but you can see the original Sky Blue Pearl underneath the lugs on both sets. Hope this helps you.

And if anybody out there has a line on an 8 or 10-lug SBP (Sky Blue Pearl) Ludwig snare, no matter what size, please drop me a line.

Now for what I originally joined this site for. I just purchased a Gretsch snare and have no idea what model or year it is. I'm thinkin' it's a 2001-2006, somewhere in that time frame. It's a 10-lug 5x14 white pearl with black rims & lugs and a silver-pewter lookin' square stop sign badge that says nothin' but Gretsch on it. It looks like the drums Vinnie was setting behind in some of his endorsement shots in the early 2000's. What have I got!? HELP ME PLEASE!!

Thanks so much to everyone, and remember, YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY SNARES!!!

Vintage drums forever, Eddie.

So many drums....only two hands and feet.

Post pictures, or it never happened.

Cool Dude

Seriously though, we need to see the badge, see the drum, in order to tell you what it may or may not be.

Dig?

Best of luck!

I guess I should chime in too and say hello. I'm mid-fifties, been playing off and on since I was 12, started collecting about 15 years ago. In my early yeas I was total Ludwig. Now I have mid-sixties Ludwig super classic blue sparkle 5-piece with Supraphonic, Slingerland pre-badge pre-vent hole 18-12-14 in blue agate, Rogers Dayton Holiday 20-12-12-16 in silver sparkle with a Powertone, Gretsch mid-fifties 20-13-16 in midnight blue pearl (with mis-match red sparkle snare, looking for matching snare), a wide variety of old (collectability varies) Zildjian, Sabian, UFIP and Zen cymbals ranging from 8" splash to 26" ride, and a newer 7-piece Tama Starclassic birch in red aztec fade as my big player set. They are all set up in one big room.

I've wanted Gretsch all my life just to experience them and just got mine about a month ago. Regarding comparative quality, my personal opinion is that (assuming the bearing edges are decent), with the right heads and some effort, almost any vintage American drum can be tuned to sound great, although different drums of course have their own character. That said, I believe the old Rogers have the best-engineered hardware (Swivomatic) while the Gretch rail consollette lives up to its reputation for being difficult. That's probably because Gretsch emphasized the quality of their shells. My Rogers, Ludwig and Slingerland toms sound big and boomy like tympany, but the Gretsch toms really do have their own unique tone - nothing else sounds like them - I love them. I've heard many opinions as to why - the silver interiors, the bearing edges, the lack of a vent hole - I believe they all play a role but I believe the lack of a vent hole is the biggest factor. (I've never owned any other vintage brands).

I'm not sure it's important that a particular brand is "better quality" than another. Their history and the love and dedication that went into their design, manufacturing, marketing and use are to be explored and appreciated as an important part of our country's history and culture.

I am currently trying to round out my period-correct hardware. I've also recently decided that while collecting and enjoying the drums is great fun and I love my drums, I would like to begin re-emphasizing my drumming skills in terms of stick control, musical tone and four-way coordination. It has been a long time since my chops were in good shape.

Anyway, I have already posted 2 or 3 questions and really appreciate your knowledge and assistance - many thanks!
