Hello folks: My name is Scott from PA, Im a 49 year old lefty that is teaching myself to play a great looking & I think not to bad sounding vintage late 70s/early 80s Hoshino Professional 4 piece maple kit with same badge 14" steel snare. Kit includes 12 & 13 inch rack toms, 22 inch bass kick, 16 inch floor tom & the 14 inch steel sanre. Kit was given as a gift, from an oldre then myself rocker that played actively till he developed copd from smoking. believe it or not? I met him at his yard sale looking for thing to buy for resell. I alwas ask yard sellers if they have any vintage hifi electronics & or musical instruments that they would like to sell. This realy nice man that I never met before in my life said, I have a musical instrument you may have for free to sell, all you have to do is move it. Of corse I replied yes!! I will movie it & thank you, thank you!!! I did not even open the cases & look at it till I had it home in my garage. My first indication when opening the cases was wow free money :O) & all I have to do is clean it up. Well to make a long story short after taking it all apart & spending a week cleaning & polishing everything it became a labor of love & the kit turned out just beautiful. I was still thinking about selling it. However from all the work I put into it, I had to set it up & play on it. Because Im a lefty I set it up left handed. Well after putting on new heads, buying a hi hat & a few cymbals. I fell in love with it & have been playing it just about every day now for about 4 month. Learning some tips & beats from youtube videos. Putting on the headphones & playing along with some favorite rock tunes. Now I do not think I will ever sell it & at 49 years old & being a lefty, I finally found a musical instrument that I can play & just love playing it no mater how bad I am or sound :O) If any one would like to see some photos of the kit? Just a tip to newbie like myself. After I started becomming more comfortable playing on my kit, playing longer, faster & hiting harder. I started geting big blood blisters on my fingers. I was taping them up with cloth tape so I could keep playing. However the tape only held up for a short while & by the end of practice it was right back to open blisters. The more I played the worst they got & were not healing to well. This went on for quite a while. Till one day I was walking through the Auto department in a Walmart made in China store & came across a pair of Grease Monkey Max Fit Gorilla Grip Glove for under 5.00. They were cheap enough, fit nice & tight. Heck for the price what do I have to loose but a few bucks & maybe a few blisters! Well it's been about 3 weeks now of playing for about 2 hours just about every day & the blisters are healed up & the gloves are holding up very well. Plus no more dropped sticks when playing. So if your are a newbie & are getting big sore blisters like I was & are looking for a cheap fix to save your fingers the pain of playing with blisters you might want to give them a try.
Hello All, One more newbie here! Well, assuming that this is the new introduction thread, just wanted to say "hey!" to everyone and introduce myself. Anyone here start their drum playing history in their grade school band? Yep, that was my start....5th grade / 10 years old / early 70's. Banged on a brand new steel/chrome Ludwig snare drum. I remember it costing one-hundred dollars!. (that's like $350 today!) Using my paper route money to make payments, I hauled that sucker to and from school 3 days a week for after-school lessons.
It wasn't until 3 years later that my brothers friend was selling his drum set and he wanted a whopping $35! It took all my savings and even had to borrow a couple bux from my brother to do it. This set was a mix of "who-knows-what" drums, a pair of hi-hat cymbals that turned inside-out if you stepped on it to hard and a steel-colored cymbal with the name "Krut" stamped on it. That sounded like you were hitting a trash can lid...but the set was MINE, it was COOL (at least to me), and it gave me the drum bug for life!
When I turned 21, I was still living with my parents but I knew I was overdue to go out on my own. Then there was that realization that I would never be able to play my drums living in any apartment. I hung on to that set for 3 more years until I realized it was just collecting dust. I remember selling the whole set off for $125 in 1982.
Flash forward to 2012 and I'm now in my early 50's. Still with the gal I married and my 2 kids are out on their own. I got my own home so I figured what's to stop me now? Well money, for one ...but after selling off some other stuff I scraped up enough to purchase a set of Pearl Exports I found on Craig's List. So after a 30+ year absence, I am starting to bang again! A lot has returned (like riding a bike) but I don't have 18 year-old arms or feet anymore. I play mostly just to get that feeling back! I can keep the beat but my fills are a bit stiff right now. Don't care...having a blast with them! This set isn't anywhere near top of any line but to me, it is the cream of the crop compared to that early set of crap drums I had as a kid. But just like back then, this set is MINE and it is way COOL (and the hi-hats don't turn inside-out either!).
Well off to practice some more. Looking forward to some back-n-forth with some like-minded drummers out there!
