Whats best way to remoe wrap on a 60's ludwig

Loading...

I feel compelled to offer this, but I would NEVER remove the wrap from a 60's vintage Ludwig drum because the covering was applied before the panel was bent to form the drum shell. This actually makes the covering an outer ply, so to remove it would be akin to stripping the wood veneer from a natural finished shell. You would be better off to buy a Keller shell and wrap it than to destroy a 64 Ludwig shell....just my $.02.

What year did Ludwig stop using hide glue? I have stripped a couple using alcohol ( for me and the wrap). The alcohol crystallizes the hide glue and it will pop right off...

I use a Metal Putty Knife with the heat gun. HEat up the wrap and the knife blade and slide it under the wrap. It cuts right through the glue. Once it's through I gently lift the wrap up off of the shell.

Heat gun and citri-strip for any glue residue.

don't forget the wood putty because you sure as hell will take some wood off with the wrap, unless you're lucky and it's maple outer ply. If it's mahogany and chances are it will be, you'll lose some of it...for sure.
