What is this Slingerland Floor Tom?

By the way, the manufacturer of that wrap is Rowland Industries and the actual product is referred to as Rowlux Illusion Film. http://www.rowtec.com/rowlux.htmlI have used it extensively in manufacturing of various pieces of scenery and stage equipment. It's pretty cool stuff. It was used behind the transporter bay in the original Star Trek series and every aquatic store used to carry it for aquarium backings.

I believe Rogers got their wrap from Rowland as well. I had also read that Precision Drum Company supplied the White Satin Flame used in the original transporter room in Star Trek!

Hi all, I'm the guy selling this drum. I bought it to make a bass drum out of, but it's just not right to modify a vintage drum. First, there is absolutely no blue hue to this drum, none. Charcoal, period. And I wish it was blue because there would be more chances for a hit. But if someone does have, say, a 12, 13, 16, 20 or 22 set in this color, this is your drum. Secondly, the high price has these very important words, "Make Offer," meaning I don't know the worth of this drum, and I've decided to let the market, you, decide. I would like to see it get a nice home. And like the listing says, I'll entertain any reasonable offers.

Thanks for posting. I think that is a great way to help make a sale and the guys here always appreciate someone who wants a drum to go to a good home.

For what it is worth I have had pretty good luck installing bass drum hoops on floor toms. The rods are kind of a tight fit due to the increased angle but they generally work. I have used fold out spurs installed in the leg brackets so I didn't have to mod the drum. It looks like this Slingerland 18" has four legs like they generally do so that may not work. Perhaps some rim mount legs would work? Also, a bass drum riser might work. That way you could use it as a bass drum without modding it.

Hi BeBop!

Yes, thanks for posting! I'm the guy who originally contacted you about the color and I felt confident that I nailed it by recognizing it as Charcoal. Still, there are others who also have extensive knowledge and feel it is Blue. If you read the posts, you'll see that, at times, we do "agree to disagree". And, that's what makes this a great forum. It's very rare when feelings are hurt, but it does happen. I've learned allot on this forum and hope you'll become a regular as well. Lot's of great people here!

Now: THAT is a great piece of information. Wrap is a complete mystery, most of the time. It might help reduce some refurbishers grief, knowing where to go for info or remnants. I knew this wrap was still being made because I came across some recently and it seemed new. Thank you and keep the lights shining.

Checked out the website and they say that they have been making their plastic film products for over 15 years. -----kind of rules them out as the makers of the wrap in question but they may be making a similar product, currently.

They refer to this product as an extruded plastic film. I think I have some of this: it relies on a white backing to produce reflectivity. Scratching the backing has a huge effect on the illusion. I'm not 100% sure that the wraps on the early '70's drums had a white backing. I have some Sonor----I will check.

(I still maintain that this is Blue Satin Flame), but it is now re listed and may sell at a more realistic price.. They are a great sounding FT and the buyer will probably re wrap it any how..

Cheers

I also noticed that it has been listed at a more reasonable price. If it sells, you're probably right that it will be re-wrapped to match an existing color.
