What have I gotten myself into? Last viewed: 23 hours ago

Loading...

I purchased these Ludwigs for $100 today. I would really appreciate your help with a few questions:

Are they late 1966 Club Dates?

Were they painted black?

Were they originally wrapped or stained? What finish would you use for restoration?

Can I get parts?

If I use stripper to remove the paint, will I ruin the badges?

Value with/without restoration?

Thanks to all of you gurus!

Yes they are club dates, this maybe the original color, they came in many duco colors. Yes you can still get parts off this forum the DFO and ebay.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Nice find. Looks like just the black lacquer over maple. That very well be the original finish. Have seen several original Black Lacquer Club Dates with nickel hardware. I think you're on target with the serial number/age as well.

U may want to consider removing the black and clear coating the natural maple ?

Just a thought !

Thanks, guys - I really appreciate your thoughts! and yes, I was wondering about clear-coating or light stain as well. This will never be a museum piece, so it might be fun to make it look nice rather than authentic. How would that affect value?

Great Score!! Cleaned and waxed the black lacquer will look killer. Nickle polished looks great on black. The maple ply used for painted drums may have flaws that were filled. You won't know until they have been stripped. If mine I would save a lot of work by just cleaning/polishing and enjoying.

Nothing special here but I like them.

Man that is a cool tough-looking little set for $100. Whatever you do with them, they're going to be awesome. That includes doing nothing at all. :)

Awesome score ! They're worth at least $500, even in that condition. If it were me,

i'd strip the original paint, lightly sand and fill any wood nicks, and repaint in original black and then lacquer to preserve the finish..Nickel hardware looks great on black..

Good luck with the restoration and show us pics after you're done !

cheers !
