Vintage Star - Craigslist Restoration Project

While working on the bass drum hardware I noticed one of the spur mounts is stripped where the wing bolt would tighten down on the spur. I tried drilling and installing a heli-coil repair but no luck.

Is there a way I can salvage this one (see attached photo)?

Is there somewhere I can get a replacement like the original?

Should I just replace these mounts with modern spurs from Gibraltar? I like how the SC-BS4 units look.

From Ralf

Here's a pic:http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=47550&highlight=star+cymbal+armThis arm is more than rare (meaning: almost impossible to find another one ...). As you have the bottom part of the bar, I'd try to weld a long bar onto it - although then the balance of power wouldn't allow to take a 20" Ride on top, I assume ...You can make replicas by yourself out of a chrome rod (as e.g.).Mine are 24 cm long and have a diameter of 9.0 mm. But please check it out first, whether the diameter in your brackets perhaps allows a slightly more thick diameter (perhaps 10 mm?).Cheers, Ralf

In regrads to the elusive Star cymbal arm here -

Confession time. I found one on Ebay a couple years ago. I bought it and thought I would ask if he (seller) had anymore. He was a big collector and indeed he did. Believe it or not, he actually had about 14 of them! I bought about 2 or 3 more (since sold them to members here) and almost bought all the rest of them. He was offering them at a real good deal, but I had no $ at the time. He had no idea what they were. I schooled him all about it and later I sent him an email and asked if he could sell me more......was not answered.

We got along great and he was a very cool and nice guy. He has a huge drum collection, but not well versed on MIJ.

.....and so yes, I have one for my Majestic.....once I get it done!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Here's a cool pic you won't see often (if ever)!

....and BTW - I just sent a message to this guy to see if he has any left. I will report back here when I get word.

All Finished! Landed on Fiberskyn Diplomats on tom batters, Ambassor Suede for tom resos, a borrowed Fiberskyn 2 batter for the kick and a coated ambassador with felt strip for the kick reso. I put on an Evans Genera Dry and Hazy 300 that I had lying around for the snare. Sounds pretty good! I am planning to get a Fiberskyn PS3 for the kick batter once I get more funds.

I tried mounting the tom onto the consolette rail but it was a total tone killer. Took it off and put it on a snare stand. Sounds great now!

I will set these up outside and get some nicer pictures when I get more time and better weather. Thanks for all of the tips and tricks. This forum is awesome!

Nice resto, nice kit. Wanna improve the sound of the tom even more? Mount a piece of thick rubber gasoline hose onto the place of the snare stand where the rims touch it. Also the floortom will sound better with floating floortom feet (Gibraltars look best).
