Vintage Ludwig Drums, 1966?

Loading...

Hi,

I just bought a used set of Ludwig drums. Based on infos from internet, the serial number is 373544, so it came from 1966.

The finishes are probably sparkling gold pearl, but still not sure.

Here's some questions:

- Is this drumset really worth it? Is it genuine based on the picture?

- How much does this drumset usually worth?

- Nowadays drum manufactures offer many kits range from entry level to top of the line kits. How about this drumset? What line is it?

- The finish surface of these drums is rough. Is this the original paint or maybe the owner had them repainted? Cause I accidently bump the tom and the bass drum together, and it scratched the paint on the bass drum easily.

- The snare drum is not made from wood, it's steel or brass, not sure. But the snare drum was also painted, matching the roughness and the color of the other drums. You can see it at the top of the drumstack. Is this ok?

Thanks in advance.

Those are some great questions to ask..... before purchasing.

Do you have the drums in your possession now?

Just wondering, cause you said you are unsure about whether the finish is sparkling gold pearl or not.

If you have them, take some more detailed pictures and post them.

It will help a lot.

Badges are completely wrong -except the snare badge. I have no idea where those huge badges came from. That's a first for me!

Grommets are wrong

The sparkle finish in that one shot looks strange -the size of the sparkles

The floor tom, tom and snare DO appear to be Ludwig and they could be from 1966, but they have been altered and/or have some missing parts. I need to see the interiors.

The bass drum is NOT a Ludwig -It appears to be a Premier, as far as I can tell. I would need to see interior shots of the shells to say more

Your question was "are they worth it?"

Worth what? I have no idea what you paid. As a collector, it's almost worthless to me. As a player it might be worth a couple hundred bucks....maybe.

Upon second inspection of those photos, it appears that the former owner has attempted to do a "fade" or "burst" paint job OVER the original sparkling pearl wrap. That's why it's difficult to tell what's going on with the color. The snare drum is a vintage Supra with a "baseball bat" tone control visible -which has also obviously been painted with a similar technique.

I don't know what type of paint it is, but the toms and snare could, indeed be 1966 Ludwig drums -except with bizarro world badges!

No idea on the bass drum -just that it's definitely not a Ludwig drum -Again, my guess is Premier.

As far as the sound goes, I kind of like it, that's why I bought it. I bought it all for $300..

Here's the photos..

All toms and bass drum had reinforcement rings.

Anyway, I kind of suspect that this is not a Ludwig bass drum, because of the bass drum spurs, I saw this once on a Premier bass drum.

Could it be a Premier? But it's kinda weird cause all hardwares are Ludwig, and those badges..

Hard to tell what the toms are with those poor pictures of the interior.....the bass drum is definitely Premier, possibly Olympic (made by Premier) with a Ludwig tom holder fitted. The snare has an incorrect messed up finish on it. And like everyone else has been saying....those badges are huge and not real 1960's Ludwig badges for sure. They may be early Keystone re-release badges off of a 1984 75th anniversary set, before they went to the normal Big Keystone or Monroe, NC badges if you will. I know that the last of the Chicago drums were fitted with badges similar to today's Monroe Keystone badges, they just read Chicago instead of Monroe. Having only seen the 75th anniversary set in the catalog, I can't say for sure if those badges you have are from one of those, or something that somebody had made.

We need better interior pics of the toms to tell if there are plugged holes, or extra holes in the shells, type of wood, etc. You may have paid too much by the looks of things I hate to say......

All of the hardware on that bass drum is Premier except the Ludwig tom mount. And that's obviously been added after the fact since the original tom mounts are still there! ;-)
