Vintage Drummer Kelly

It really is too bad you find classic shells that have been drilled through for other hardware. I suppose most would not have anticipated the appeal that vintage shells now have.

Hardware has come a long way over the years. I use Gibralter 8600 series vintage "clone" flat base stands to go with my old Ludwig Downbeat kit and it's a nice compliment. The newer design features, ease of use and classic look really add to the kit.

You're right the "Classic" strainer beside the other ones is the sexiest out there... Perhaps the Dunnett strainers come close??? Checkout the newer style classic beside the older 40's version. The older classic is nickel vs. chrome and the newer Ludwig is shorter.

The older nickel Classic I think dates from 1948??

The newer chrome finish with "Ludwig Classic" stamped in (see last photo) was used mainly on marching snare in th 60's and 70's because they had the torque needed to "strain" heavy gut snares across 15" marching shells. When you use one you can feel it's made to put a lot of torque on gut snares.
