Vinegar and Rust

Loading...

Just a note

I have forgotten where I saw it (maybe here), but I read that vinegar removes rust. I tried some distilled white vinegar on some rusty old cymbal stands yesterday and it was amazing - dissolved the rust right off. I used distilled white vinegar only because it happened to be what was in the house. Some very rusty small parts may need to soak in a bowl of vinegar for 10 minutes or so.

I saw that here, as well, and recently tried it. Only, I did 50/50 warm water and vinegar. Worked well in some chrome and hardware bits.

I have used the dollar Store jug of White Vinegar to remove rust from tension rods and small hardware parts and it eats it right off. Works great. Throw the parts in there and leave over night.

Is there anything else that needs to be done after the parts come out of the vineage? I have a few parts that look like they went down on the Titanic.

Post #15 has a few pictures.

Don't leave the parts too long (a few hours will usually do the trick)in the vinegar, some metals can oxidate and turn dark -almost black. Of course, this can be polished off but then you havent gained very much.....

Usually you don't have to do anything. -No scrubbing, no brushing.

Just rinse the parts in water and dry them carefully so that they dont start rusting again. If the parts are crome, I finish the job with a cote of Turtle car wax.

I will take my parts out of the vinegar and wipe them off really good with a dry cloth and then give them a spray of wd40. Then after a few minutes Wipe them off again.
