This tip I've found only makes it better.

Mix in with your vinegar and water a good dose of Dawn (blue) dishwashing liquid. It tends to speed the process up.

I've used this in an industrial application on heavy rust and it's amazing and safe to all of our drum hardware.

And then polish as you normaly would depending on your equipment.
