Value of this Slingerland kit

Mark,I’ve had the same set in Champagne Sparkle (1966) for the better part of a year. The mount was changed to a super set-o-matic, but is otherwise the same. The drums tune effortlessly and sound great high or low. Two 12-inchers is absolutely fine, and because the bass is only 20”, you can get around the drums very easily, as you can set up all the drums on nearly the same plane.I won’t say what I paid for mine, but it was lot more than his asking price. Then again, mine came with a chrome Krupa snare, original cases and a few bits of hardware. I think they worth $700 easy, but that’s just me.Josh

Man, that double tom mount is one serious piece of hardware! That in itself has to be worth some money. Beautiful kit all-around.

I can't quite make it out, but is that a picture and signature of Gene Krupa on it?

Mark, I'm glad this might work out for you!

Well, you all can have your double 12" toms, but that setup would never work for me. On my two Slingerland sets and Ludwig set that feature 12" and 13" toms, the 12-inchers never get used. They sit at home. I'm comfortable with 13" rack toms, and prefer a four piece set. The 12" tom on my Leedy set is OK, but I wish it was a 13."

However, my DW set features a 9x12 tom, which sounds great. The extra inch makes a big difference.

Drumbob, I’m with you on preferring a 13” if it’s a four piece. It’s no coincidence that most four-piece sets feature the 13 and 16. A winning combo.

But just got back from a gig, and I played my Modern Solo as a four-piece, with 12, 16, 20 and snare. The 12 held it’s own, even playing tom-heavy tunes like Cream’s Sunshine of Your Love and The Rivieras’ California Sun. Not that a 13 wouldn’t have been better...

So...I checked out the drums today! This Modern Solo kit is so misrepresented that I wanted to cry! CryBaby

The seller was very nice and allowed me to check out whatever I wanted. I first did the magnet test, thinking that all hoops should be COB. Only the batter hoops were COB, with the reso hoops being COS from the 70's!

Next, I removed the batter head from the floor tom to check for additional holes from those non-Slingerland mounts. Yes, you could see one original hole still showing from each bracket! Next, the top solid maple re-ring was coming apart! The bearing edges have seen better days! You could barely tell that the interior was mahogany!

While both 12" toms are original to the kit, it was obvious that Slingerland made a mistake with muffler placement. You could tell that the kit was supplied with two left-hand toms. I took the COS hoop off the bottom of one of the toms and it's obvious that the kit saw a lot of use during the "bottom heads off" craze of the 80's! Very sad indeed!

I pointed out to the seller that he had the bass drum set up backwards! He had no clue that it was this way!

Pretty much all chrome was in sad condition and all tension rods were rusty! The wrap was in poor condition as well. The one rack tom I looked at also had loose re-rings!

I was being both honest and informative with everything I saw, and the seller seemed to appreciate this. I finally told him that this kit was not in "very good to excellent" condition as described, but rather "fair" at best. I also informed him that he'd have a difficult time getting $300 for this kit and that he really should have jumped at the $600 offered by a recent prospective buyer who also checked out the kit.

He thanked me for my expert opinion and said he might just sell everything separately. I told him it was still a factory kit and should not be broken up.

Finally, I just noticed that he changed the price on eBay... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1962-Slingerland-Red-Sparkle-4-Piece-Drum-Set-Nice/202740877961?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908131621%26meid%3Df3610fdd7a7f4353b330b48128dd5265%26pid%3D100678%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D202740877961%26itm%3D202740877961%26pg%3D2481888&_trksid=p2481888.c100678.m3607&_trkparms=pageci%3Adb8171e8-b026-11e9-b871-74dbd180ac9d%7Cparentrq%3A31af1a7316c0abc5a6098b79ffff854c%7Ciid%3A1

WTF!!!! After regaining my composure, I thought maybe he changed the price so it wouldn't sell. But, then I though why not just end the auction?

I'm glad I checked out this kit, which confirmed to me that so many sellers are completely clueless when it comes to the value of vintage drums...or any drums for that matter!

The man seemed like a reasonable human being. Now, it's confirmed; he's off his rocker completely.

DrumBob! You are absolutely correct, sir! I just don't get it. He seemed like a really nice guy and respected my opinion on what he had. Guess not!

So the seller finds out his kit has real issues and is not nearly as pristine as he thought it was, and he more than doubles the starting bid? And that BIN? Sheesh! What is he thinking?

Seriously perplexing...

The plastic covered gold couch is a huge “red flag” that you are dealing with someone who struggles with reality.

Stop stringing and tuning your instrument, make music now.
