I would offer $599, given all the modifications. Parts have been changed, parts are missing. I would stay away from two 12" rack toms. That makes no sense to me, but if it doesn't bother you, then offer $599 and see what he says. He's probably hot to sell at this point.

There's nothing at all wrong with the two 12" tom configuration. I gigged for many years with that type of rig. I liked the symmetry of the drum set. If you know how to use a drum key, the two toms will sound no different than if one of them was a 13" tom. That double tom mount is not the best one I've ever used. But, it served me well for playing hundreds of Rock music gigs. I can see that the bass drum hoops are wrong for the era. I can't tell if the tom hoops are all the proper Stick Savers. If the tom hoops are correct, I could see that drum set fetching $650. If the tom hoops are incorrect, $550-$600 would be my offer. You're fortunate that you would not have to pay for shipping. If you pass on the drum set, someone else will be delighted to own it.

The two 12" toms was a very common offering from all the big drum companies back in the day, This is a great configuration, very easy to tune one high and one lower. I've owned probably 4 or 5 kits with two 12" toms

Plenty of issues here and my gut feeling is this kit is going to look even rougher in person. It has that "ridden hard and put away wet" look about it. I'll probably catch some heat on this but I'm feeling 1/2 of asking or walk away.

Thanks for all the replies and honest evaluation! I have no issues with two 12" toms! In fact, I like the symmetry of having the same sizes. And, yes, not a problem with tuning them!

I messaged the seller with the issues I saw and, without trying to insult him, made an offer of $450. Here's his response...

"I really appreciate you interest and offer on the drum kit, but unfortunately I cannot sell it that low. In fact, someone had come over and offered $600 but I had to also declined. If you see these drums in person you would probably understand my position because they are in very good shape. Thanks again and rest assured I didn't get offended with your low offer. You are welcome to come over and see for yourself."

The seller supplied his number and I'll text him later to arrange an in-depth evaluation of the kit. As I've always said, and continue to say, "condition is everything"!

I’ve had the same set in Champagne Sparkle (1966) for the better part of a year. The mount was changed to a super set-o-matic, but is otherwise the same. The drums tune effortlessly and sound great high or low. Two 12-inchers is absolutely fine, and because the bass is only 20”, you can get around the drums very easily, as you can set up all the drums on nearly the same plane.

I won’t say what I paid for mine, but it was lot more than his asking price. Then again, mine came with a chrome Krupa snare, original cases and a few bits of hardware. I think they worth $700 easy, but that’s just me.

Wow, a Super Setomatic on that 20" bass drum with dual 12" toms! Looks great! And, I really love Champagne Sparkle!

Attached is a picture of the Modern Solo that I saw in my first Slingerland catalog. Not only did I like those dual 12" toms, but I liked the kit in "Sparkling Red Pearl", too! I also have a first generation COB GK Sound King snare drum that shows in the catalog picture...the shell with no lines around the center!

Again, I don't need another kit. In fact, I'm going to be selling many of vintage kits very soon. But, this Modern Solo is a cool kit. I'd like to go over each drum with a fine tooth come! That will probably drive the seller crazy! LoLoLoLo
