The more I look at it, the more I think Ralf is right: this wasn't a snare to begin with, but a tom. It's not just the position of the holes or the non-symmetrical cut on the shell, but most importantly: there's no snare bed that I can see. Dead giveaway... :(

That said, I'm still willing to give it a go trying to turn it into a nice deep snare. I'm thinking Tama Imperialstar lugs, only I'm not sure they fit the current hole-spacing - I'd like to avoid drilling any more holes, if I can help it. And I'm still thinking green sparkle here... :)

Tama and Pearl spacing are different.

Yes, I thought they might be :( Well the spacing here is 4cm (1.57 inches), so.... which one? Pearl is an obvious choice, but will something else fit?

From Cyllocke

Well, the muffler is definitely 1970s Tama (I found the exact same item on e-bay), lugs and strainer are Pearl-like, and I think so's the original hoop. The strainer in particular is an SR-015 Gladstone type, commonly found in 1970s Pearl snares. Beyond that.... no clue as yet. Been trying to find some info on the butt side, the one that's missing a part; so far no luck at all. Nothing even remotely similar. Also, there seems to be a horizontal mark/cut on the shell, like a factory-made groove (3rd pic, top of the missing lug). Not sure what that's for?Drum's stripped now and the hardware is soaking nicely in dish-soap water. I'm considering sturdier lugs (if I can find them), probably Tama - we'll see. What type of wood do you guys think this is?Alex

Alex,Wow i have not seen one of these snare's in a long time.A little history on the drum it was made at West Coast Drum is Santa Ana,Ca in the mid 1980's..The shell is a 9 ply M.I.J, shell that came in new the shells were cut to size 5.5",6.5",8" deep.

Now on the hardwear it was all copy's of Pearl. As far as the paint inside the drum we at the shop painted that .We used to buy the paint at and old paint store that long gone the name was Standard Brand's.

We used what ever muffler's we had sometime's a Tama one sometimes a copy of a Pearl..

Now your question on the butt side of the drum it's missing the strainer its just like the one you have on the strainer side now..We used two strainer's on the drum never a butt plate..

... out of the blue, there it is :) Thanks Mikey, I had almost given up on finding out more info. So this used to be a Pearl copy... and it would explain why the bottom seems to be cut out from a longer drum - it was :) It would also explain the absence of snare beds. Any badges / stamps used on that?? What about wrap?? Was there any? Is it possible to get any photos??

Getting all excited again... :)
