Unidentified Kit

Hello Vintage Drum Community

This is my first post and want to share my kit for comment as you will see is most likely "One of a Kind" or early manufacturer prototype that was not badged. I am processing information to describe more accurately so please understand.

I have owned this drum kit for 15 years now and cannot determine the original origin and age. I purchased them from salvation army association (friend) that knew I loved drums. The drums have no badges of any kind and are most likely “one of kind” or very early prototype. I am amazed by the detail, craftsmanship and function of every handmade piece to this kit. The sound is characteristic “Jazz Trap” due to the small diameters and each drum is double hooped to accept calf skin heads, Remo fiber skin was fitted to emulate that material. Each drum has functioning mutes, lugs, tensioners and vents, each one hand made. The high hat stand is wood and spun aluminum support, the cow bells are soldered brass, cymbals for the hat are not marked and possibly handmade as well. Drum mounting hardware is solid brass, threaded, bolted and functions very well (sturdy), most amazing is the snare drum tension mechanism, it is pull and catch lever all handmade. The kick pedal was purchased separately attempting to match the era of the drums, if I would guess the late 1940’s. I have appreciated these drums like a fine piece of furniture. The only identifiable parts are snare drum head and cymbal that is stamped “Roxy” Made in West Germany” and could have been added at some time.

Drum Kit:

• 5” x 14” Snare

• 6” Concert Tom

• 8” Concert Tom

• 12” Mounted Tom

• 21” Bass Drum

I have more photo that I can provide but for purpose of this thread, I will keep to minimum.

Can't say that I've got any answers for you, but I'm curious to see what my fellow forum members come up with!

Very unique, indeed!

Looks like a completely home-made kit, possibly using very old vintage shells (i.e. pre-40's). But there's a lotta standard sorta "buy-at-the-hardware-store" hardware on that kit.

Maybe done by a good woodworker ?

Not done badly, I might add....although you couldn't call it pretty....

Yes, that is good take, maybe retired engineer they certainly knew about drums and so much labor and detail. Honestly they sound pretty good also.

I seem to recall seeing one similar to this in Modern Drummer a few years back. The pedal is a Ludwig Speedmaster, which began production in 1959. Very nice kit!

All I can say sbout this one is it is a work of art. The bridge style hoops, looks like Peavey saw this one and copied it for the plastic hoops they had for the Bridge Style wood sets. Nice work to whomever did it though...

Looks all home made and beautiful work.

Just offhand, I'd be careful about hitting that ride cymbal, it looks awfully tight with a washer clamping down on the top? I don't see any pad on top to allow it to pivot if you hit it hard. Could crack the cymbal at the hole in the top of the cup.

Interesting comment about modern drummer, I actually submitted for "Kit of the Month", but that was about 6-7 years ago, they never responded. Wonder if this was published and I never knew about.

I have the issue here somewhere, but it may take a while to locate it.
