UK Hayman Vibrasonic full black drum set

Loading...

Hello ladies and gents.

I've owned a Hayman Vibrasonic five piece kit for about 10 years now.

I bought it when I was 17 from a friend of a friend for £150 - I was told at the time it could potentailly be valuable, especailly the snare.

As to the history of the model etc - I've no information about it.

It's not pristine condition; with cosmetic scratches, a few small dents and a little metal corrosion etc but it's still working order and looks quite sweet.

If I were to post a few pictures and as much information as I can about it, would anyone be interested to have a look and chip in their two cents?

Anyway, this is more of a hello to the forum than anything, so I look forward to hearing from anyone interested.

Here are a bunch of snaps of my 5 piece Hayman Vibrasonic kit (not including stands/cymbals)

I'd love to get some feedback on the history of this kit (if known), and indeed if it could be considered 'collectable'.

I am fond of this set, and although it doesn't sound particulary amazing in my care, I'm sure somone who knows what they're really doing could get a belting sound from it.

Thoughts welcome. Thank you.

Very nice!! From your pics, the kit looks like it has 2 different badges - gold and silver...I believe that these were 2 different eras...Maybe this kit was produced at a transitional period of Hayman...

I don`t know much about this company, so take my opinions with a grain of salt...I`m sure more knowledgeable members will chime in shortly...

Cheers

Ash Pears!

Your drums looks faboulus! -And the original Hayman vibrasonic drums are definitly collectible drums. They were "the loudest drums" you could find in the early 70:s. Great drummers like Bill Bruford (from "Yes" and "King Crimson") played Hayman drums.

However, as "gantro" points out. Your drums are from two different periods.

The yellow badges were used from 1969 to 1973.

The white/silver ones where used from 1974 to 1975.

I have a feeling that your kit was put together from orphants. Simply, someone have collected drums from different years to put a kit together.

And, the wrap is propably changed on the drums as well.

Hayman has never, as far as I know, made any drums with glossy black wrap.

The original "Hayman black" was a dull ,brushed, black wrap.

Furthermore, the tom holders on your drums are not original. The original tom holders were known as "Knuckle crushers" simply because they were so hard to adjust without getting your hands or fingers destroyed while attempting to do so. Another difference between the yellow badge era and the white/silver era was that the lugs were abit different. -The earlier ones was all made in metal. the newer ones had a small piece of black plastic attached to them. -Your pictures indicate that all of the lugs look the same on your drums.

Myself, I have a black Hayman kit with mixed badges. 13", 16" with white/silver badges. 14", 22" with yellow badges. However all of my drums has the brushed, dull black finish. And all of the drums are made with the "knuckle crusher" mounts.

Thank you for the quick feedback so far on this guys, all this information already is fantastic!

Some very interesting points about the badge and wrap issues.

On closer inspection, the badges almost seem like they have just been glued back on (quite sloppy work) and I did notice that the shiny black covering hasn't got a perfect seal around either, leading me to think that it has been re-wrapped at some point.

It would be great to investigate and see what colour it might have been originally.

The snare has a different wrap quality to it though; it looks and feels much more like the brushed, dull black finish you mentioned.

I'll have a look into these knuckle crusher mounts you mentioned too.

Thanks so far

Ash Pears!

I will go down to my garage and try to take a few pictures of my Hayman drums to show the difference between the earlyer and the later lugs. and also to show what I belive is the correct mounts that your drums should have.

However I think that your drums, nomatter what mounts you have, are drums that propablay sound absolutely terrific. The vibrasonic cote to the interior of the drums is absolutely a fantasitic cote that should make your drums sing.....and sing very loud ;)
