Two 18 in floor toms for under $10.

My oldest daughter is a cheerleader and her school has a tradition of beating on make-shift drums during pep rally class competitions. Most of them are just upside down garbage cans or plastic barrels. When I saw the "drums" that my daughter's class was using, I decided they needed an upgrade. I thought I'd post my design in case any of you ever have a need to make a lot of noise on the cheap...

I got two 35 gallon plastic barrels for free from a local car wash. They get soap and car wax delivered in them. Luckily the bottom of the barrels measures just about 18 in, so I cut a circular hole about 17 in in diameter out of the bottom. This leaves a nice rolled over bearing edge for an 18 in tom batter head to rest on. I picked up two lightly used heads at the local drum shop for $5. I puzzled for quite while about how to tension the heads, I thought of using actual hoops and lugs, but challenged my self to come up with a cheaper solution. I realized that the top rim of the barrels was larger in diameter than the bottom, I assume so they can be stacked on top of each other. My solution was to carefully slice off the top rim and use it as the hoop. The top of the barrels are made from remarkably thick and solid plastic. Next was a trip to Harbor Freight for some huge zip ties and a kit they sell for putting grommets in the corners of tarps, I used those to strengthen the holes anchoring the zip ties. Total spent at Harbor Freight about $5...I love that place!

My planned worked remarkably well. I used a Dremmel to cut slots in the hoop for the zip ties to loop through. Then I just yanked down on the zip ties a few clicks at a time until the head had a nice even tension, and bammo! These things sound like giant tympani drums, and actually stay in tune nicely. My wife added some decals and duct tape to dress them up...mission accomplished.

What made you think to go to a car wash for those containers? What a great idea, I probably would have bought hoops and lugs but I would have never thought of a car wash for a drum source either. Great job! The decals and tape really look great as well!

Thank you!

Thanks guys.

I'm sure my next engineering project won't go so smoothly. My wife loves to find things on Pintrest or Etsy and ask me to recreate them...last year it was a giant 6 foot diameter x-mas wreath to hang on our front double doors. The challenge was to split it down the middle so you could still go in and out of the doors, and naturally still have both halves light up. Turns out that when you cut the metal hoop structure behind the wreath your wife just paid $80 for, the metal springs out straight. That project did end with a good result, but I'm embarrassed to say how long it took me.

The drums were comparatively easy, and a lot more fun to tinker with. The car wash is on my ride home from work, I offered to buy the drums, but when I explained what they would be used for, they were happy to donate them. It was just a stroke of good luck that the bottom was a perfect fit for the head. On the first one, I cut the entire top off (which is now the bottom), but it was better to leave part of the heavier plastic rim. That cut was a struggle because the plastic is nearly 3/4 in thick in places. My jig saw was laboring, so I ended up using a reciprocal saw.

Ingenious! Similar to rope tension but with zip ties. Are they played flat on the floor or elevated? Have you come up with any improvised ideas for floor tom legs? And why leave the zip ties hanging? It would look so clean if you clipped them.

Thanks for sharing that.

I thought the same about the un-trimmed zip ties, but still a great idea!

What can I say...my wife and daughter liked the look of the long zip ties hanging down??? I would trim them if it were up to me, but not too short because it's nice to be able to pull them a little tighter if needed without using pliers to grab them. They even wanted to tie red and black bandannas on them like Steven Tyler's mic stand.

I thought of ways to get them up of the floor so the bottom could breath a little more, but have yet to solve that one in a way that could hold up to rabid teenager abuse. I did try laying one on it's side and using a kick pedal...it was awesome, but I'm afraid they would get too rowdy and scratch up the gym floor or whatever. As they are, they are very loud, and if you tilt them back a little when you hit them it's even better.

Friday is the assembly before the big rival game, unlike the school I teach at, the kids at my daughter's school still really get into the pep rallies.

This probably came to your mind, but anyway, maybe some Styrofoam blocks to elevate the drums.... if they get lost or whatever, no big loss and easily replaceable.

These drums are a fantastic idea, thanks for posting..!!

The pep rally before the rival game...104th meeting between the teams! The drums were loud, the class of 2020 won the spirit award, and the team won the game for the first time in a few years. Fun times!
