I agree that many drummers don't /can't tune their drums properly. I've shared some kits that just sounded terrible.

But who are these Pro's you are reffering to? Any pro I've ever heard has terriffic sounds.

Please be specific, this can turn into a great discussion.

Drum tuning is down to the individual's ear in question. After all, there are some people who like to mix milk and Pepsi cola together!!!! Some people actually look forward to an Applebee's meal!!!! And there are some people who wouldn't know good music if it bit them on the arse!!!!

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

What does it matter? Your idea of a properly tensioned drum may actually be different from others ideas. We all have different perspectives and different approaches and different drum voices. I can guarantee you that my drums are tensioned differently from how you would tension them. There is no absolute "right" way to tension a drum. Relax and enjoy the artistry of the drummer or don't. It really doesn't matter.

I really love this site!...and Bunny, you & I must be brothers from different mothers...you constantly crack me up!

Tuning is like a lot of things in music, it's between the ears as well as in the ears. My idea of what sounds good is not someone else's idea of what sounds good, etc. These days it's mostly the producer's idea of what sounds good, probably has been for years & years. You think RIngo came up with all of the sound effects that were used on those albums?...naw, he was like "blime, that sounds far-out mate!"! It's hard to tell now what's triggered, what's electronic or what's sampled & played independently of a drummer...I prefer the old double headed jazz tuning myself, but that's me. A lot of guys try to tune from behind their kits, I always tuned mine to the dance floor and/or room I was playing. Sort of like buying a cymbal, I get someone else to play it while I listen across the room, when you play an acoustic instrument, you need to keep the acoustics in mind and remember that making it sound pleasing out front is more important than making it sound good behind the kit!

Just my 2 cents...and that's about what it's worth! LoLoLoLo

i get hired as a drum teck all the time , there is so much that can effect a sound of a drummer in live shows , out door event's , studio . when i work with a drummer we alway's go with a sound that goes with the style they are playing if the drums can meet the demand . if it's original music they are playing i will spend time with the band to find that signature tone , just like when you hear a famouse drummer at the start of song you know who they are just by sound alone . most non pro drummer's dont have the time or money to try different thing's and run the heads/drums into the ground and when they take the stage with that set there is only so much gateing a sound man can do . i never call out a drummer on his sound if it's that bad , i will offer friendly advice and a buissnes card . most are right if it sound like S#IT to you it may be his best sound ever .
