It's been almost 2 years since I grabbed an end-70's Mahogany Superstar with satin finish for almost no money but I just wanted to show you what it ended up like.

Maybe some purists won't like the woodhoops but I think they look nice on this set. Enjoy...

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and wanted to share my 60's MIJ Stewart story:

I got this used Stewart kit in 1970 when I was 14 and played in a rock band all through high school, then life happened and they sat in a closet in my parents basement for the next 43 years.Well this year they sold their house and the drums were returned to me, so I decided to restore and clean them up and start playing again. Took them completely apart, tightened every screw, scrubbed and polished the now yellowed WMP wrap and all the chrome hardware, replaced any broken hardware and two new cymbal stands and new snare stand, all new Remo coated ambassador heads and oh yeah...treated myself to a whole new set of Zildjian "A" pies (Sweet).

Drums are: 14X20, 9X13, 16X16 and 5.5X14, Cymbals are: 20" medium ride, 18" thin crash, 18" medium thin crash and 14" new beat hats.

They turned out better than I expected and they sound great and I am having a blast playing them again at 62 (never too old to rock n roll)

First off, welcome to the forum.

You have an amazing set there, and a great story to go with it. So cool to hear you brought them back to life, play and enjoy them. They'll keep you young ;)

I have a 60's Stewart kit as well, its among my favorite vintage kits. Yes, even above MIA sets I own. There's just a magic to it. They were made to replicate MIA kits of that era (Slingerland, etc)...but, my Stewart's may look like my vintage Slingy's, but they don't sound alike.

Cheers.

Thanks Trilok and nice kit too. To be honest when my father was buying me these drums I really wanted a WMP Slingerland kit with 24" bass drum and two 16x16 floor toms just like my idol Mr. Buddy Rich, but my Dad was not about to spring for it not knowing if I was going to stick with it or not so I settled for a used WMP as close as I could get, which was these Stewart's. You may notice that I have this kit set up just like Buddy had his, same exact cymbals, coated ambassador heads and cymbal placement. My passion was always jazz and big band, but in the 70's and being in my teens no one was playing this type of music so I was in a rock band and we had a blast. Here is a pic of me on the kit back in the day circa 1973, the marine pearl was white, not sure what I was thinking with those crazy cymbal stands though, lol

I figured I'd add some updated pictures of my Coronet snare (one of them).

Stripped down, cleaned, polished, lugs packed, a little white lithium grease for the tension rods, new vintage Emperor for the batter side, new Ambassador for the snare side, new Pearl 20 strand wires, otherwise all original.

Cheers.

I may as well add a pic here. One of my Star kits. I have a bunch of pics, and a write up in the drum gallery section. Here's a link, if anyone wants a closer look.
