You answer a C'list add for a pair of 14" hi-hats for sale.

"Old Zildjians. Not really pro cymbals...but good for beginners. Need a good cleaning. $100. "

You go look at 'em. It's a 14 y.o. kid selling 'em...he's been playing for 2 years and he wants to "upgrade" to a pair of Sabian AA's or Zildjian A Customs or the like. So the sale of these isn't even gonna get him his new cymbals.

He says they were his grampa's and his parents pulled 'em out when they got him his starter kit.

You look at 'em and they are a pair of old K's....intermediate stamps, perfect weights 785/875. Matching stamps...a matched pair. You try 'em and they are just gorgeous.

His price is $100, cash.

What do you do ? Seriously.....

(This just happened to a drummer friend of mine recently).

Temptation is all around us...

The kid really has a right to know about equipment. Offer him the $300 they are worth.

Ethically, it would be better to help the kid learn. Does he have the right to learn about vintage k's?? If honesty prevails here, then you'll have a happy kid who will learn to appreciate good instruments, he'll have respect and trust in a decent, older "wiser" drummer who though about him instead of his potentially selfish self, and grandpa's heirloom will be truly appreciated. On top of that, the adult who treated a kid with decency will have a clear conscience and enjoy his hobby more, let alone be able to look the kid in the eye and feel like a "big brother" instead of stealing candy from a baby..

I would have to offer him more money for them.

If insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, is it insane to practice?

You need to give the kiddo what they are worth. No wait. Take 'em for 100 and consider the Drum gods smiling this day. Hang on. That's not right. Don't take advantage of one's ignorance of a situation. Help the kid out...and THEN take 'em for 100 and run out the door laughing! NO! That's not right! Ok. Ethical. Think ethics. Do the right thing. Help the boy out and become his mentor. Maybe then, he will just give them to you for being such a good teacher. Yeah. That's the one. Man, life is tough.

Very simple, a fool and his money are soon departed. Call me the fool, because I would give him the $100.00 and say have a nice day.

Answered an ad for a "old drumset, needs work $40.00" Got there, in a bad part of town, and it was a Slingerland Radio King snare, bass drum and tom. Looked her dead in the eye and said, " your ad says $40.00, correct?" She said yes, I gave her the money and we both were happy.

Consider that sometimes, the person selliing might be telling you a story too....Me personally, I love capitalism.....

And ethics have nothing to do with it, if you're not smart enough to ask the right questions or do the research, then sorry for you. I'm sure that the person who steals someone's equipment and then sells it is not worried about selling it for too cheap or being ethical.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

My sentiments exactly! If the kid has NO CLUE, then his loss, your gain. Chalk it up to a learning experience for him and a great set of old K's for you (assuming that they don't sound like trash can lids of course! just because they are old and are K's doesn't necessarily mean that they sound good.) A deal is a deal no matter how stupid or ignorant the seller is.

Nuff said!

Good question/scenario

I have faced a dilemma from time-to-time at this forum in a related way. Let me explain:

People have come here seeking information about an old drum set they found or one they dug out of Grampa's attic, etc. It would be easy to mislead people in some instances.

Awhile back, there was a person who joined up to ask about a red sparkle drum set that is wife had found at a neighborhood yard sale for $30. He wanted to know more about it -see what it might be worth. Well, turns out it was a complete Jazzette kit with the matching Supraphonic. It was complete with the cymbal stand, snare stand, pedal and hi-hat. The only thing missing was the second cymbal stand. Eye Ball

Needless to say, being a Jazzette fan, I went nuts! I told him everything I knew and mentioned that "If you ever decide to sell it, please allow me first refusal" -like I expected the guy to contact me. Well, he DID contact me Eye Ball and so I shot him an offer. I knew the offer I made was relatively low. I knew the set was worth more -and I told him so. But I also knew what my budget was and I threw an offer out on the table that was do-able foe me. He accepted it, happily. He just wanted to get rid of it and didn't want to wait around for an auction to draw to a close. We hooked it up and that was that. Thanks to his wife, that $30 yard sale find turned into quite a return on their investment. And, I got a Jazzette kit!

The moral to the story is that, as long as everyone is happy, and get what they want/expect, then that's all that matters. It's not ripping anyone off if they set the price.

Exactly! Like you said, they set the price, so if thats all they want, then be comfortable with it and move on.

You're right. One man's garbage is another man's gold.

Somtimes I defer to moralising way too quickly. Each circumstance is different. I have to admit to haggling, penny pinching, looking for the deal and buying way under price if possible.

More responses, please. I'll tell you what I would have done, and what my friend did....but I'd like to hear from another 4 or 5 members first.

O-Lugs.....if you don't mind my asking, how much did you offer for the kit ? I am just curious.
