tama king beat snare

Loading...

I picked up one of these .. Steel, 5.5" deep, triple flange hoops, parallel throw.

Missing one hoop and a bunch of strainer parts. I found a guy who's going to sell me the strainer pieces and I picked up an original tama hoop...

Anything I find online shows that these came with diecast hoops. Were they also available with flanged hoops?

That same shell, was sold as the Powerline, with a different strainer, and flanged hoops. The King beat had diecast hoops, and was available in 5 or 6.5 ,and with a choice of 3 different strainersbut was never made in 5.5 .These are awesome drums, but their weak spot is the lugs.Forget about tuning really high, they will crack on you.But even tuned above med-high,a rim shot sounds like gunfire. One of the best snares Tama ever made, and they've made quite a few great snare drums.Early Swingstar steel snares ( 80's,with the Tama flying T badge ,in red) also used the same stell shell, and are diamonds in the rough.

The very first King Beats did come with triple flange hoops, it was what I call the transition period. The paralel mechanism had still the Star logo on it with the Star type shell, later they redid the shell with the ribs but still Star logo on the mechanism. It wasn't until around 1975 they came with die cast hoops and the Tama logo on the mechanism.

Its a 5" I suppose. I always mix 5" and 5.5" up. I never measured it.

Maybe someone down the line took the diecasts off.. It is an actual tama throw off.. Not labeled as "star"

Does it have the gated hoops on the bottom or just standard hoops?

It came with a triple flange top hoop and no bottom hoop. I just scooped up an original TAMA ten lug bottom hoop (triple flange)

Oh ok, then definitely was changed. I saw last week on le-bay both a bottom gated and top die cast hoops for sale both Tama, sold separately but from the same seller.

Maybe I'll find a set someday.. But I seem to steer away from snares with diecasts on them. In have a cob gretsch with them and it feels like the hoops choke the drum

Gotcha. This is a matter of personal preference but I would try to get my hands on triple flange hoops with the gated bottom hoop, just so it looks somewhat original to the older models. But then again it's a matter of personal taste. I know Yamaha makes them, to find original Star or Tama ones might be dificult quest.
