Zyn and Super Zyn were made by Premier. They're NS12 alloy, not the best, but not the worst cymbal ever made. Not a big collectors item but there are a few Zyn lovers around. If you plan on selling them, don't expect big bucks.

Incorrect info here. Zyn cymbals were NS12 and pretty horrid, however

the super zyn was a B20 cymbal and early versions were completely hand

hammered like K Zildjian. I've heard some excellent super zyns.

Can`t remember which site but a member had written about doing a metalurgical test in a lab and they were between B8 and B20 but not sure which year model they were. Mine are from the 60`s and forgive me for not including the date.

That test was was on a Zyn, not a Super Zyn.

Super Zyn were the professional grade. These were made from B-20 just like the other high end cymbals were and still are.

The earlier ones that just say "Super Zyn" were made in England by Italians. They were former WWII POW's as a matter of fact.

The "5 star Super Zyn" were made by UFIP. Some of the guys who made them in England may or my not have been employed there, but we don't really know.

The old Brits that I talked to preffered the "Supers", but they talked down the "5 stars".

In the oddball collectors market that is becoming fished-out pretty cleanly, they are a good find and worth some money.

I have some examples of all of the cymbal trademarks that I know of, attributed to Premier, that say " Made in England". There were supposed to be later ones made by" a major cymbal maker"(according to a representative of Premier Canada)----i think this was Paiste and there are now Zyns and Super Zyns ,made in China. To my knowledge there has never been a Zyn cymbal that said Made in Italy. Zyns,Kruts,Beverley and most of the Zyn 2 star all appear to be Nickel Silver alloys, spun and machine hammered from varying thicknesses of sheet . In addition, there are considerable differences in two cymbals of the same size and close weight in performance characteristics, so I am guessing that the actual alloy formulation and/or tempering technique changed over the years. Some of the cymbals are downright awefull and are the ones responsible for the dismal reputation that Zyn cymbals have, yet some are surprisingly good and could fool any blindfolded cymbal afficianado. The Super Zyns and 5 stars as well as a very small number of 2 stars were of a superior Bronze alloy---likely B 20 or something close--------this B 20, B 8 thing is a bit of a crock. These guys are melting bronze. Presumably ,they bring in ingots of known formula but who is to say they are not monkeying with that,when they cast?--- or they just simply pay for a specific custom formula from the smelter? Paiste is celebrated now for having a proprietary bronze. I think they have all had proprietary bronze all along and that is part of what makes the difference.Once you throw some cowhorn or something in to an ostensible B 20 alloy when casting and mix it up it is no longer B20.

Anyway : All of the Cast bronze Zyns I have seen, say " Made in England". Some of them show distinct similarities in profile to some Italian cymbals and also show distinct arced casting marks ,associated with rotocasting. Zyn either bought rotocast blanks or rotocast the bronze themselves. No doubt,the cymbal artisans ,requistioned from the ranks of the P.O.W'S. had close ties with Pistoia and not all with U.F.I.P.; some with Zanchi, Bellotti etc., so they would have imported both technology and differing skills.

One difference between the Supers Zyns and the 5 Stars is in hammering. The Super Zyns all appear to be hand hammered and some of the 5 Stars have the regular punch pattern machine hammering similar to the Zyns but it is difficult to tell because the hammering on the 5 Stars is hard to see----they may have been hand hammered as well. Nevertheless, both cymbals can be first rate but like all makers, they sometimes turned out items not to everyones personal taste.
