stencil snares - Brass?

Loading...

Anybody ever had a Pearl (or Star) made stencil snare that is made of BRASS?

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Perhaps I have stumbled upon a realization about the MIJ world for us all.

Perhaps we will get some traffic here tomorrow.

I think Pearl made them under their name starting in the late 60's and early 70's John, at least from what I can gather from checking about 5 Pearl catalogs this morning over on drumarchive.com :)

Would be interesting to know if Pearl made any stencil brass ones for sure!

I posted a couple pics on the "MIJ Snare (Pearl) BUY THIS NOW" thread of a snare I have that resembles the one in the initial post. This is a snare I bought back in the mid-seventies and haven't modified. (Uh, that I recall. This was the mid seventies.)

I've wondered what it is made of and this seemed the appropriate thread to throw some photos at.

This drum seems to be peeling to reveal what appears to be brass. So maybe COB? It is definately SOS. (Something over Something).

Not the best images, but they give you an idea.

Whadya think?

It's real easy to determine, Bardford. Just check the shell with a magnet. If it sticks, it is steel.

If it does NOT stick, it is Brass.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks,

John

Magnet test says it's steel.

So the peeling indicates the drum is likely either COR (chrome over rust), or the more desirable COP (chrome over patina).

Thanks John,

Bardford

Eric - you will LOVE that snare. I have had two 8 luggers of that shell.

I still have two 10 luggers with that shell.

Soak/brush/polish that up and it will look sharp! Pearl President lugs. No Steel Wool!

Mine are all COS.

If you would like to hear what it sounds like - go to this thread and check out my solo that I posted here. http://www.drumforum.org/index.php?/topic/107583-post-your-drum-solo-here/?hl=solo

Alas, my Goodwill snare from today is not brass but now I'm very certain the knob adjustment butt is different than the later non knob style with just the 2 screws.

As stated in a previous post, I also have the ten lug version of that "President" COS drum. These drums and their relatives have made me rethink what is a good snare drum VS what purports itself to be a good snare drum. "Good", expensive overbuilt snares that sound like boxes or drums like these, or a recently restored 80's Tama Swingstar 5"X 14" that sounds very similar to an Acro. I also sold(belatedly) a 90's Rockstar snare that sounded KILLER. Whenever I see an 8 or ten lug drum with that "Tip" style strainer I consider purchasing it. They are usually around $30.
